Godden: “We need to dig in and stick together”

Matty Godden says Charlton Athletic must draw on their togetherness and find a response after the Addicks’ 1-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

“It’s really tough, especially with the run that we’re on,” Godden said.

“It’s a tough one, and one that we’re all feeling in the dressing room. But it’s only us that can turn it around. We’ve just had a little chat amongst ourselves about how we need to dig in now. This is going to have to come from within.

“The only positive we can take from the game tonight is that we’re quite quickly back here on Saturday, so we need to dig in and pick up a result.”

Godden admitted the Championship’s demands can bring sharp changes in form, pointing to Charlton’s strong start to the season before their recent run of 11 games without a win.

And the forward insists that the Addicks must stick together if they are going to turn their fortunes around, starting with Saturday’s meeting with Sheffield United in SE7.

“It’s the Championship at the end of the day,” he said.

“It’s so brutal. You look at us and how quickly it can turn - at the start of the season, we were absolutely flying, and the next minute we’re struggling to pick up results. It’s about us now and sticking together. We just need to turn this around, and it’s only us that can do that.”

The striker, who made his return from injury off the bench, is eager to build on the minutes and be back firing regularly.

“I just want to go out there and be myself, and that’s what I’m going to do,” Godden explained.

“I’m going to try and bring a little bit of energy and experience for the boys. Hopefully that can help them and inject some life into us — and I need to stay fit.”

Meanwhile, Godden acknowledged the supporters’ backing and called on the Valley faithful to get behind the team on Saturday to send Charlton into the international break on a more positive note.

“It’s massive,” he said.

“We’re going to need everyone. We need the fans; we need absolutely everyone to find something within themselves and really drive us on Saturday. It’s a big game leading into the international break, and we need to make sure we go into that break with some kind of result.”
