Jones: "We have to respond quickly"

Nathan Jones claps supporters

Nathan Jones admitted his side lacked quality in the final third as Charlton suffered a narrow home defeat to Bolton Wanders on Tuesday evening.

A solitary goal settled a frustrating contest at The Valley, with the Addicks unable to find a way back despite enjoying the majority of possession and territory for large periods of the game.

Reflecting on the result, Jones felt an "edgy" evening was ultimately decided by a costly mistake.

"It was an edgy night," he said. "I understand the edginess. We make a silly error when we've been under no pressure whatsoever.

"We started the game really well, as we did against Norwich City and as we did against Bristol City. It's just that something then happens and it knocks the wind out of our sails.

"Realistically, we had enough territory and enough opportunities in the final third to carve out more than we did, but we didn't demonstrate that quality."

Despite introducing a number of attacking options throughout the evening, Jones was left frustrated by his side's inability to create a clear-cut opening.

"No matter how many positive changes we made, how many quality players from our squad we put on the pitch, we didn't carve open a clear-cut chance," he explained. "That's the really frustrating thing.

"Whether it's quality, decision-making or confidence, we didn't demonstrate it. We had two centre-forwards on the pitch, wide players who could go one-v-one and create, and attacking players coming off the bench, but no one demonstrated that quality around the final third.

"When we had set-plays, we either hit the near post or kicked it over the bar. That decision-making, confidence and quality just wasn't there tonight."

Having made six changes to his starting XI, Jones was pleased with elements of his side's performance without the ball and their ability to limit a possession-focused opponent.

"I wanted to make sure we got certain things right," he said. "They're a high-possession side and we out-possessed them. We had 57 per cent of possession tonight.

"We've taken possession away from them, we've had more touches in the opposition box and more opportunities around the final third without really causing them problems."

The manager believes recent results have followed a similar pattern, with individual moments proving costly and affecting the team's confidence.

"On the weekend we caused Middlesbrough real problems early on, but then we make an error and they score," he said.

"We don't seem to recover from those moments. Against Bristol City we started brilliantly and a loose challenge gives them a penalty. Against Norwich we were well on top, then we make a big error and suddenly we don't react well to it.

"We're a bit fragile at the minute and that's the frustrating thing because we haven't been that way before."

With one fixture remaining before the international break, Jones called for unity as Charlton look to return to winning ways.

"The responsibility is with me first and foremost," he said. "I have to lead and make sure we're preparing them right.

"We've got one more game before the international break and we have to win the game."

Jones also praised the backing of the Charlton supporters, who continued to get behind the team throughout the contest.

"They can play a part and I understand the frustrations," he said. "We've been through tough times before and we've always come through them.

"This weekend we have to be positive. It's a massive game against a massive club and we have to be better. If we are, that gives us an opportunity to win a game, and that's the only important thing."
