Charlton fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers at The Valley on Tuesday evening.
Sam Dalby's first-half strike proved to be the difference on a frustrating evening in SE7, which saw the Trotters head home with all three points.
Danny McNamara produced the first clear-cut opportunity after seven minutes. His cushioned volley was well saved by Bolton goalkeeper Jack Bonham.
Charlie Kelman thought he had given the hosts the lead eight minutes later after finding the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
On 18 minutes, the visitors broke the deadlock. Bolton took advantage of a error in midfield, with Sam Dalby pouncing to put the away side ahead. The goal proved to be the decisive moment of the first half, although Charlton continued to search for a response.
In stoppage time, Karlan Grant delivered a dangerous cross from the right-hand side, but Harvey Knibbs was unable to direct his header on target as Bolton went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Charlton made a change at half-time, with Miles Leaburn replacing Nathaniel Chalobah, as the hosts looked to increase their attacking threat.
The Addicks came close to equalising in the 55th minute. Kelman’s cut-back found Leaburn, whose goal-bound effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Chris Forino.
Five minutes later, Kelman again threatened, meeting a dangerous cross from Tyreece Campbell with a header that narrowly missed the target.
Matty Godden made his return to action just after the hour mark, replacing Kelman. Conor Coventry tested Bolton from distance, seeing his effort drift narrowly wide.
Charlton were presented with another opportunity in the 66th minute following an indirect free-kick inside the Bolton penalty area after Josh Sheehan’s back-pass was collected by Bonham. However, the hosts were unable to capitalise on the set-piece.
As the game entered its closing stages, Nathan Jones made further substitutions, with Joe Rankin-Costello, Millenic Alli and Sonny Carey introduced as the Addicks continued to push for an equaliser.
The hosts came agonisingly close to salvaging a point in stoppage time when Campbell cut inside and curled an effort towards goal from outside the box. His strike beat Bonham but went just wide, as Charlton fell to defeat in southeast London.
The Addicks will now turn their attention to their next Sky Bet Championship fixture, as they return to The Valley on Saturday to host Sheffield United.
