Grant strikes as Addicks draw with Robins

-

Charlton continued their unbeaten start at home this season as they shared a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at The Valley on Saturday.

Karlan Grant's early strike put the Addicks in front, but a Scott Twine penalty before the break ensured it would be a share of the spoils in SE7.

The home side opened the scoring on eight minutes with a wonderfully-taken goal by Grant. Tyreece Campbell drove forward and fed the ball into Grant inside the box, who controlled it brilliantly before firing it beyond Sam Tickle with an excellent left-footed finish.

Indeed, it was a deserved goal with Nathan Jones’ men dominant in the first 15 minutes.

The visitors had their first effort on goal midway through the first half, as Brian De Keersmaecker’s cross found Dom Ballard free inside the Addicks’ penalty area, but he could only head the ball over the bar.

The Robins were awarded a penalty after Conor Coventry was adjudged to have tripped Ballard inside the box. Twine stepped up and scored from the spot to bring the visitors level.

Miles Leaburn set up an excellent chance for Campbell, as Charlton looked to restore their lead. The striker did well to beat Rob Atkinson and get a cross into the box, but the ball was turned behind by Campbell.

Arthur Okonkwo was called into action just before half-time to prevent Twine from getting his second of the game and the two sides went into half-time level.

The gaffer made a double change early into the second half, as Kayne Ramsay and Ivan Mesík entered the fray in place of Micah Mbick and Josh Edwards. The changes meant there was a switch in shape for the Addicks, as they moved into a back three with wingbacks.

Charlton had a golden opportunity to get themselves back in front after Tickle spilled Leaburn’s cross into the path of Campbell, but the Robins goalkeeper reacted quickly to deny his shot, before he blazed the follow-up effort over the bar.

Charlie Kelman and Harvey Knibbs were introduced for the final stages of the game, as Leaburn and Grant were both replaced. Millenic Alli was the final change, coming on for Campbell.

The Addicks were awarded a free kick on the stroke of the 90, which was struck well by, only to be kept out by a super stop from Tickle.

Charlton weren't able to find a winner, as the points were shared in SE7. Nathan Jones' side will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley (7.45pm BST).
