Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of right-back Danny McNamara.
The experienced 27-year old arrives at The Valley on a two-year deal, making a return to the club where he began his career as a youngster.
Sidcup-born McNamara joined Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s Advance Centre at the age of seven and was picked up by the Addicks academy where he remained until the age of 14.
Following his departure from Sparrows Lane, he impressed in non-League with Corinthian, catching the eye of Millwall who brought him to The Den in 2015, embarking on loan spells with Welling United, Dover Athletic, Havant & Waterlooville, Newport County and, finally, St Johnstone, where he joined then-Lions and now-Charlton teammate Tanto Olaofe for a stint in the Scottish Premiership before being recalled in January 2021.
It was then that McNamara made his breakthrough in the Championship with Millwall, establishing himself in the side, before going on to rack up 166 appearances for the Lions, scoring twice.
The former Republic of Ireland U21 international now joins the Addicks following the expiration of his contract at The Den and becomes Nathan Jones’ fourth signing of the summer window.
Speaking after putting pen to paper in SE7, McNamara said: "I’m absolutely delighted to get it done. I started my career here when I was really young, so it holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to get going again.
"I know how big of a club Charlton are. I’ve got a lot of family and friends who are Charlton fans - it’s a great community and I’m delighted to be a part of it.
"As soon as I met the manager, I knew it was the right place for me. The ambitions of the club and what he wants to build is very exciting and I want to be a part of that."
His new boss Jones added: "We’re really delighted to add Danny to our ranks. He’s someone that’s got massive experience of the Championship and knows what it takes to win games. He adds real competition to the right-back area. He’s an impressive individual in that he’s a winner, and he wants to achieve - we need those type of characters here. As a character, as an athlete, as a player we’re delighted to have him with us and I’m looking forward to working with him."
