Meet Valley Gold crossbar challenge winner Paul Plumbly

Charlton supporter Paul Plumbly scooped £8,500 during the interval of the Addicks’ League One clash against Cheltenham Town at The Valley after successfully hitting the woodwork in the Valley Gold crossbar challenge.

Having sent the Covered End into a frenzy, Paul proceeded to run towards the tunnel before performing a knee slide inspired by Charlton assistant manager Johnnie Jackson.

“It’s literally not sunk in!” beamed Paul. “I keep getting sent messages on Twitter from someone who has got a different angle of it. It’s quality!

“As soon as it hit, I don’t know... I almost kind of don’t remember it hitting!” he continued. “Me and my mates who had come had jokingly said if I hit it I’ve got to do a Johnnie Jackson knee slide! And then as soon as it hit I was like, ‘I’ve got to do it!’ It was just that surrealness of, ‘oh, I’ve actually hit it'. Then my two mates jumped on!

“When the Covered End are singing ‘sign him up!’ and stuff like that… it’s what you dream of as a kid growing up supporting a club like Charlton where it’s very family-orientated. That was a dream come true almost.

“Obviously it’s great to support the club in sort of any way you can really,” added Paul. “Just to give something back and help out the youth system and Valley Gold is just a nice thing.”

Asked what he will spend his prize money on, Paul revealed: “The money will go towards a holiday at Christmas - I’m hoping to go to Florida if the US opens the border.”
