Bowyer proud of players after Addicks go 'back to basics' to claim Wigan win

Lee Bowyer was pleased to see his players go back to basics as his side earned a much-needed victory at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Chuks Aneke bagged his 13th goal of the season in the first half at the DW Stadium and it proved to be enough as the Addicks claimed their fourth win from six on the road.

“From start to finish, we addressed the game well,” Bowyer told Valley Pass following the 1-0 win.

“We competed and did the basics very, very well. If I’m being nit-picky, the one disappointment was that we didn’t score more. We should have put the game to bed.

“A lot of senior players came in and it showed. Pearcey was outstanding. Ben Watson came in and was very good in front of the back four.

“They changed their shape at half-time and caused us a few problems, but we coped with it very well.”

Meanwhile, Bowyer was proud of the way his player responded after a difficult last week which saw Charlton suffer defeats to Burton Albion and Blackpool in the last seven days.

“The most important thing was that we got the three points and moved on from Saturday,” he explained.

“I just said to the players, when you’re off the back of some bad results it’s easy to crumble and hide.

“I told them to forget everything that has gone on, forget to six, just focus on doing what you’re good at and be confident. Then the results come naturally and then we can see where we are.

“I just felt maybe the pressure of having to win every game affected them and made them nervous,” continued Bowyer.

“We tried to take that pressure away from them.

“Today, I thought we moved the ball well on a bad pitch. I’m really proud of the players because they could have crumbled after Saturday but they didn’t. Every single one of them fought together.

“We’ve got a clean sheet and the win and now we have to build on it. The players worked hard and showed that, when we do the basics right, we’re not a bad side.”
