REPORT | Wigan Athletic 0 Charlton 1

Charlton made it four wins in their last six away games with a much-needed 1-0 victory at Wigan Athletic.

Chuks Aneke scored in the 19th minute in an open game but Ben Amos was relatively untested in the Addicks goal as Lee Bowyer’s side took three points back to London.

Charlton started the game with attacking intent and Aneke nearly gave Charlton a first minute lead but headed an Adam Matthews cross just wide.

At the other end former Addick Joe Dodoo headed a fourth minute chance wide of Ben Amos’ goal.

Charlton had more of the opening minutes of the game and despite playing some nice football took a lead in more direct fashion. Conor Washington did well to flick on a long ball and Aneke shrugged off pressure from two Wigan defenders, who had the opportunity to clear. The striker went through one-on-one with Jamie Jones and coolly slotted home his 13th goal of the season.

Aneke was the Addicks' dangerman in the first half with the striker nearly doubling the lead on the half hour mark when he couldn’t quite get enough on the end of a deflected Matthews cross and saw his touch go through comfortably to Jones in the Wigan goal.

Washington also blasted a shot over the crossbar and the Addicks felt they should have had a penalty when Aneke went down under heavy pressure Curtis Tilt just before the half-time break.

After a very quiet first half the home side were able to create pressure at the start of the second. Alex Perry drove straight at Amos and shortly afterwards Viv Solomon-Otabar saw a deflected shot go just wide, from the resulting corner Funso Ojo’s powerful effort went wide of the goal.

For Charlton Liam Millar had two drives at goal from the outside of the box as the Addicks looked to build on their first half threat and Washington saw a shot blocked after Matthews had done well to get to the byline and cut back to the Northern Ireland international.

Minutes after Millar trickled a left-foot shot wide of the post the dangerous winger saw a driven right-footed effort cleared off the line by Scott Wootton.

The Addicks defended well, with Amos having few saves to make as Charlton secured three points.
