Charlton’s U21s played out a 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic at The Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
The young Addicks found themselves behind after just three minutes. Adam Moseley raced beyond the Charlton defence before calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Finley Woodham to give the visitors an early lead.
Chris Lock’s side were level within minutes, as Ellis McMillan tapped home from close range. Ethan Brown did brilliantly to work the ball into the box, and McMillan made no mistake from inside the area to bring the home side level.
Moments later, Ed Thomas produced an excellent block at the other end to prevent John-Paul Cavanagh from restoring the Lactics' lead.
McMillan fired Charlton into the lead on 26 minutes with a well-worked finish. The midfielder was at the heart of everything positive from the home side in the first half.
Cole Simms capitalised on a series of defensive errors from the young Addicks and equalised for Wigan two minutes later.
The score was 2-2 at half-time.
Reuben Reid had a chance to put Charlton ahead early in the second half, as he got the better of Harrison Rimmer in the Wigan defence. He let fly, but his shot was straight into the hands of Matteo Spinelli.
Reid was again close to restoring the Addicks lead after some great work in the box, but Wigan’s Sebastian Spelman did well to nick the ball off him for a goal-kick.
McMillan almost had his hat-trick after getting the better of the Wigan defence, but Spelman was there again at the last minute to thwart the danger.
The tempo of the second half did not match that of the first, as neither goalkeeper was tested.
The spoils were shared at full-time. Chris Lock’s side are next in action on Friday, September 4th, when they host Leeds United’s U21s at Princes Park (7pm BST).
