Reading friendly moved to The Valley behind closed doors

The Addicks' final pre-season clash with Reading, originally scheduled to take place at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday, August 1st, has been relocated following concerns regarding the playing surface at the Royals' stadium.

The fixture will now be held behind closed doors at The Valley, kicking off at 2pm BST.

Reading have issued the following statement: "Following a period of unusually hot and dry weather during the development of the club's newly laid playing surface, it has become clear that the pitch is not yet sufficiently developed to host the fixture.

"The prolonged dry conditions and lack of natural rainfall have slowed the pitch's development at a crucial stage. While good progress continues to be made, additional time is needed for the grass to strengthen and the root system to establish around the newly installed hybrid stitching system.

"With the priority being to have the pitch in the best possible condition for the start of the league season, the club has taken the decision to relocate Saturday's fixture in order to protect the playing surface ahead of our League One opener against Luton Town."

The club will be offering free streaming of this fixture on CharltonTV, with live commentary from Greg Stubley and Steve Brown.

Supporters who have purchased tickets for the friendly in advance will be refunded automatically within the next five working days.
