Mesík reflects on Tottenham defeat

Ivan Mesík was disappointed by the manner in which the Addicks bowed out of the Carabao Cup, after suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

“It was a good test for us before Saturday. We are disappointed, we gave away so many goals today," he said.

“We know their quality, we know they are better than us, but we prepared well. We had the game under control at the start and then we gave away the first goal, and it was an easy one.”

“Then unfortunately, they scored again. They were really quick, and we couldn’t handle it. We gave away so many easy corners, set pieces and that is what has cost us today.”

Mesík was forced to play out of position after injuries to Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio caused a reshuffle in defence.

“It happened really quickly, but it is part of the game. Sometimes and you have to react quick. We weren’t at our best," he explained.

The defender was handed his full debut by Nathan Jones on Wednesday evening.

“Every minute, I am grateful for every minute, and to play against Tottenham you know. I was really hungry to play these kinds of games. I am really grateful from this and we have to take all the positives from this game.”

“We have started really well in the Championship, so I think we have to look back at the positives that we did for the first couple of games. Then if we look at today and take all of this and keep up to our standards we will be on our way.”

Lloyd Jones netted his third goal in three games in north London.

“It is strange why he is there every time! But I am happy for him, and I hope it continues on in this way!”

Charlton were backed by a sold out away end at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and were in fine voice throughout the evening.

“We are so pleased we had the fans here. They travel every game away in their support and they do give us more confidence.”
