Arthur Okonkwo: The story so far...

-

Arthur Okonkwo has joined the Addicks on a season-long loan from Sky Bet Championship side Wrexham.

The goalkeeper arrives as Nathan Jones’ eighth signing of the summer.

We take a closer look at his journey so far.

Arsenal

Okonkwo came through the ranks at Arsenal and went on to sign a professional contract with the Gunners.

The shotstopper worked his way up through the ranks, and appeared on the bench for the first team on a number of occasions.

Crewe Alexandra (loan)

The goalkeeper joined League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra on a season-long loan in July 2022. He impressed during his time in Cheshire and kept 10 clean sheets in 22 appearances for the Alex.

He was recalled by Arsenal in January 2023.

Sturm Graz (loan)

In January 2023, Okonkwo joined Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz on loan until the end of the campaign. Throughout his short spell in Austria, he helped them lift the Austrian Cup, keeping a clean sheet in the final as they beat SK Rapid Wien 2-0.

Okonkwo totalled 18 appearances for Strum Graz in all competitions.

Wrexham

In September 2023, Okonkwo joined Wrexham on a season-long loan following Ben Foster’s retirement. He arrived shortly after the Red Dragons’ promotion from the National League to League Two.

The shotstopper quickly established himself as a key figure between the sticks, playing a crucial role as Wrexham continued their rise through the EFL under Phil Parkinson.

Okonkwo played an important part in back-to-back promotions, helping the club progress from League Two to League One and then from League One to the Championship.

He particularly impressed during Wrexham’s League One campaign, recording the second-highest number of clean sheets in the division. He also posted the highest clean-sheet percentage of any goalkeeper to make five or more appearances in the league.

The 24-year-old arrives in SE7 with two promotions under his belt, having played 121 games in a Wrexham shirt.

International

Okonkwo has represented England at various youth levels, from U16 to U18. In April 2026, he switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria. He earned his first senior cap for Nigeria against Zimbabwe in the 2026 Unity Cup at The Valley.
