Elliot Lee: "Hearing my song gave me goosebumps and tingles down my spine!"

Elliot Lee has revealed hearing his name sung by the Charlton supporters gave him goosebumps.

The attacking midfielder has quickly become a fan-favourite at The Valley and during Saturday’s win at Burton Albion started hearing a new song the Addicks faithful created for him.

He told international supporters on a Zoom call this week: “To be honest I don't know all the words myself, they started singing it in the first half on Saturday and I was like ‘I’m sure I just heard my name, but I'm not sure what the words are’, everyone was trying to work it out.

“It wasn't until after the game when I got in my car and I was getting all these tweets and Whatsapps. It was a surreal moment. It's the first song I've ever had about me in football, it gave me goosebumps and tingles down my spine.

“I've been at other clubs before and fans have liked you, but it's a completely different feeling when they're singing your name, it makes you feel like the best player in the world, it makes you perform better, it just is a great feeling and I'm loving every minute of it.”

Lee has two goals and two assists in his time at Charlton and has impressed with his creativity and his work on and off the ball.

He said: “It was quite a tough start, I came in and I was over the moon to be joining Charlton. The results were not going well, I thought I myself was doing okay but I knew I had to get fitter and better.

“All credit to Jacko for turning things around and giving us a new lease of life, and that is no disrespect to Nigel Adkins, who was absolutely great with me but obviously a change was needed. When I joined I was over the moon but it wasn't going great on the pitch, now I’m over the moon to still be here, the results are going great and the fans are on side, it's a great place to be at the minute.”

The 26-year-old was full of praise for the Addicks' dressing room.

“Pearcey is in charge of the music,” he explained. “It's never the same song, always a different mixtape, sometimes the lads moan, sometimes the lads love it, it seems to be working recently.

“In terms of the loudest characters Jayden Stockley is lively, one of the funniest characters I've met in football. Albie Morgan is always up to something as well, I spend a lot of time with Albie and he's always up to mischief. There's a few lively characters - Alex Gilbey, Ben Watson is always up to something as well, it's a great dressing room and is great to be a part of, at the minute everyone is enjoying and is getting on well.”

Charlton Women’s player Rachel Newborough also joined the call with international supporters. Lee explained he was pleased to be part of a club where the women’s team are full time professionals.

He said: “I think in this day and age of football the women's game is getting bigger and bigger. It's absolutely brilliant that they are full time. It's the first time I've been at a club and we are all in the same facility.

“For a club to be successful everyone has to be a unit so having the women's team, us, the fans, the owner, the manager and the board, everyone has to be on the same page and we're all pulling the same direction for this great football club, it's a recipe for success.”
