Josh Davison is brimming with confidence after bagging his first league goal of the season to earn a point against Portsmouth at The Valley on Saturday.
The striker followed up his first league start of the season at Gillingham last Tuesday with a cameo off the bench against Pompey, popping up at the back post to fire the Addicks level from Corey Blackett-Taylor’s cross, adding to the two goals he got against Crawley Town in the Papa John’s Trophy last month, and the 22-year old is hoping to add more as he champs at the bit for more opportunities.
“It’s always good to get that first one and get off the mark,” said Davison.
“I’ve had to wait for it to come, but I’m happy that it’s finally come and, hopefully, it’ll give me the confidence to get more and more.
“It was my first goal in front of fans at that end, as well, which is always good.
“Those goals are my favourite ones – a little back-post tap-in. When Corey [Blackett-Taylor] gets the ball, he’s so quick and so good at one-v-one as well, I know that I just need to get into the box and it should come. He’s put it on a plate for me.
"You just have to focus on the contact and, four yards out, I back myself, so I’ll take that!
“[This season] has been quite good for me, so far. I’m learning a lot and I feel I’m improving every day. The coaching has been very good for me, confidence-wise, the boys have been really good with me as well, so I feel as confident as I can be at this moment.”
“I came back in this summer as a fresh face really and the manager just said to me ‘show me what you’ve got,” he added.
“I did well in pre-season and I was told that I would be staying around and that’s the kind of faith that you want. I now have to try and repay it.”
Meanwhile, the striker insisted that he will continue to give 100 per cent on the pitch to prove himself, whether it’s from the start or off the bench, and reserved special praise for fellow forward Jayden Stockley who he says has aided his progression.
“Every time I step onto the pitch, I’ll always give 100 per cent,” explained Davison, who enjoyed a spell on loan with Forest Green Rovers in League Two last season.
“I like to think that’s my bare minimum – I’m going to run, I’m going to put myself about and hopefully the goals come with it. That’s what I want to add more – the goals coming with the effort I put in.
“Jayden helps me a lot, I learn a lot off of him. He’s an unbelievable striker, especially in this league, he’s one of the best, so I have to keep learning off him and, hopefully, I get the chance to keep playing.:
Speaking of his loan spell last term, Davison added: “The loan last year helped me grow up. I learned a lot from the different coaching and playing around different players and being in a different environment was good for me.
“I’ve come back, technically I feel better and I’m getting more league football under my belt.”
The Addicks are back at The Valley on Tuesday evening as they host Bolton Wanderers (7.45pm).
