Steve Gallen on the signing of Elliot Lee and the last few days of the transfer window

Charlton's Director of Football Steve Gallen

The Addicks completed the signing of Elliot Lee on Thursday and the club’s Director of Football Steve Gallen was delighted to be able to sign the attacking midfielder.

The 26-year-old joined on a season-long loan from Luton Town, becoming Charlton’s eighth signing of the summer in the process.

Gallen said: “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to bring Elliot in, he is a terrific player with a lot of quality. We’ve been wanting to add to our squad in that area behind the strikers and Elliot can play as an attacking midfielder, a second striker or off either wing. He’s tricky, he’s creative, he’s difficult for defenders and importantly he creates and scores goals.

“Not only is he a good footballer but you speak to people about him and they all say what a good character he is too and that is important for us when we are bringing a player in. There is a good team spirit in the squad already and Elliot will only add to that.”

While the Addicks have been aware of Lee for a long time, they had to move sharply to get their man.

“It all happened very quickly in the end,” Gallen explained. “Obviously he’s a player we’ve kept an eye on and we were ready when the opportunity came up to bring him in. I do have to thank Gary Sweet and Mick Harford at Luton who have helped us get the deal done quickly.”

It has been a busy summer for the Addicks with Jayden Stockley, Craig MacGillivray, George Dobson, Akin Famewo, Sean Clare, Charlie Kirk and Corey Blackett-Taylor already arriving but Gallen insisted his work is far from done ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

“We’re really pleased we’ve signed Elliot but as always with a player signing I have to be like ‘Great, we’ve signed him, that’s eight players this summer. What next?’. We’ll have more business to do before Tuesday’s deadline, that I can tell you. The phone doesn’t stop ringing and we’re focussed on bringing in the right players for this football club.”
