MATCH PREVIEW | Charlton v Peterborough United

The end of the regular season is now in sight with Charlton facing the first of their final five games as they host fellow promotion-chasers Peterborough United at The Valley on Saturday (3pm).

Tuesday's emphatic 6-0 victory at Plymouth Argyle has put the Addicks in pole position for a play-off finish with Nigel Adkins' men sitting in sixth place, one point ahead of both Oxford United in seventh and Portsmouth in eighth and with two games in hand on the former and one on the latter.

Saturday's opponents are sat in second place, seven points clear of their nearest chasing rivals with four games left to play, but they come into the clash in SE7 off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Gillingham in midweek.

Earlier this week, Adkins confirmed that Conor Washington and Ian Maatsen are set to return to the squad on Saturday following injury lay-offs, while Ryan Inniss will also return having been rested on Tuesday.

That provides the Addicks boss with the luxury of a fully-fit squad to choose from.

For Posh, midfielder Reece Brown is set to miss out after being forced off during their defeat to Gillingham on Tuesday, while goalkeeper Christy Pym remains sidelined.

Charlton boss Nigel Adkins: "“We know it’s going to be a tough game but I’d like to hope Peterborough know it’s going to be a tough game for them as well. We’ve got momentum, spirit. We’ve been solid in our defensive resolve and we’ve got a massive goal threats which have been demonstrated again tonight."

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson: “Charlton had an excellent win in midweek and have appointed someone who knows how to get out of this division in the experienced Nigel Adkins. It is always a difficult game at the Valley, but we are looking forward to it, we have won our last two on the road and remain in a good position in the league with four games to go."

Charlton and Peterborough have met on 24 previous occasions with the two sides winning nine apiece and remaining six games ending in draws.

The reverse fixture saw Posh run out 2-1 winners at the ABAX Stadium in January with Sammie Szmodics' double cancelling out Conor Washington's first-half penalty.

The Addicks' last home victory over Peterborough came in the Championship in November 2012 with Ricardo Fuller and Yann Kermorgant scoring in a 2-0 win.

Keith Stroud will take charge of Saturday's game. He has officiated 34 games this season, producing 92 yellow cards and two reds.

His last refereed the Addicks for a 3-2 victory over Bristol City at The Valley on Boxing Day 2019.

Stroud will be assisted by Sam Lewis and George Byrne with Alan Dale as the Fourth Official.

The match will be played behind closed doors and supporters are reminded to maintain social distancing guidelines and to stay away from the stadium when the match is taking place.
