MATCH PREVIEW | AFC Wimbledon v Charlton

The Nigel Adkins era begins at Plough Lane on Saturday as the Addicks take on AFC Wimbledon (3pm).

Charlton's new boss will take to the dugout for the first time as his side make the short trip across south London, hoping to build on recent form and consolidate a place in the top six.

The Addicks go into the game five unbeaten, occupying that final play-off spot, while Wimbledon face a very different battle as they fight for their League One status.

Mark Robinson's men find themselves in 22nd position, two points off the safety of 20th place and come into the game without a win in six, although they have picked up four draws from that spell.

Ryan Inniss will remain unavailable as he approaches his return to full fitness, with the Doncaster Rovers trip on Good Friday being targeted for his return.

Adam Matthews is the only other absentee as he continues his recovery.

For the hosts, stopper Sam Walker is likely to miss out with a knee injury, while the game might come too soon for Ethan Chislett who is nearing a return from an Achilles injury.

Jack Madelin and Zach Robinson have also been missing in recent weeks, but have both received minutes for the Dons' development squad this week.

Charlton boss Nigel Adkins: “It’s another team to tick off, I haven’t been there before, so I’m looking forward to that.

"I must say Johnnie Jackson has done a great job, the staff and the players. So we’ll go down to the finer details to see if we can keep the winning run going. But this division is tough, there are no easy games."

AFC Wimbledon boss Mark Robinson: "We’ll probably look at their key players and where their threats come from.

“We’ll have an idea of what they have done previously but also need to be aware that can completely change. I always say to the players that football is not paint by numbers – you need to develop decision-makers so they can react.

“There will be a 20 per cent focus on them and the rest will be on us."

Charlton have met AFC Wimbledon on 10 previous occasions in all competitions with the Addicks winning four, the Dons four and the remaining two ending in draws.

In terms of the 'original' Wimbledon side, there were 16 fixtures played against Charlton, with the Addicks claiming four victories, the Dons eight and the other four matches drawn.

The reverse fixture at The Valley in December saw Charlton come from behind to run run out 5-2 winners, with Conor Washington, Jake Forster-Caskey, Jonny Williams, Chuks Aneke and Ben Purrington all getting on the scoresheet.

Our last away day at Wimbledon resulted in a dramatic 2-1 win at Kingsmeadow in February 2019 with Naby Sarr's free-kick cancelling out Michael Folivi's opener, before Igor Vetokele netted an injury-time winner.

Charles Breakspear will take charge on Saturday afternoon. He has refereed 27 games this term, producing 104 yellow cards and six red cards.

He last officiated the Addicks for the 3-1 Papa John's Trophy victory over Leyton Orient at The Valley in November. The last league fixture was the 4-0 final-day win over Rochdale in SE7 in May 2019.

The match will be played behind closed doors and supporters are reminded to maintain social distancing guidelines and to stay away from the stadium when the match is taking place.
