Charlton Women | Eartha Cumings: "A win would have been massive but a point is really important too"

Charlton Women extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 1-1 draw against Lewes at The Oakwood on Sunday afternoon, but goalkeeper Eartha Cumings admits Riteesh Mishra’s side are disappointed not to have picked up all three points.

Jess King broke the deadlock early in the second-half when she capitalised on Ella Rutherford’s spilled free-kick before the Addicks were pegged back just four minutes later when a defensive mix-up between defender Grace Coombs and Cumings gifted Ini Umotong the equaliser.

“I think if any team deserved to win it, we did,” revealed the Addicks goalkeeper. “We did well to stay in it at the beginning and keep it 0-0, and probably should have won it in the second half because we were the better team. A win would have been massive but a point is really important too.

“The final result is really disappointing. A draw is not the most unfair result in the world but it’s just frustrating. The way we concede the goal is not good enough - that was pretty poor from us.”

The Scotland youth international was, however, pleased with how the Addicks reacted to the manner in which Lewes levelled the scoreline just four minutes after King’s opener.

“You can’t let that ruin the whole game. Thankfully, we didn’t let that build up too much. They didn’t really get any other opportunities barring their one goal so that was good.”

Charlton are now unbeaten in four in the FA Championship and, as the former Bristol City stopper explains, are building some much-needed momentum.

“That’s four games that we’ve not lost and that’s massive. We’ve got six points I think from that. We’re moving up the table a bit and putting a bit of distance between us and the bottom which is nice to take a bit of pressure off.

“It seems like we’re going in the right direction, a lot of good players came in in January and have re-energised the squad - it’s been good.”

Next up for Charlton Women is a trip north to take on third-placed Sheffield United. The 21-year-old ‘keeper is confident that her side can return to SE7 with a result and admits the Addicks raise their game against the bigger teams.

“I think we can definitely go up there and get something, I don’t see why not. We’ve been good.”
