Bowyer on Ipswich game, Albie Morgan and getting supporters back at The Valley

Lee Bowyer is looking for his side to learn from their mistakes in Tuesday’s loss to Burton Albion and put things right on Saturday against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The Charlton Manager explained he pointed out the good things and the bad things to his players following Tuesday’s loss.

The Addicks were unbeaten in eight before Tuesday and speaking at his pre-match press conference Bowyer said: “We know defensively we are a lot better than that. We literally gave them the goals.

“I always want a reaction, when you lose you always want a reaction. We’ve got a squad of players that are fighting for a position every week, every game. It is a bit easier at the moment because you have to rotate. I think it is a case of putting that [the Burton game] to bed. It is gone, we know that isn’t us. Then we get back to resuming what we are good at. That is being solid, being good as a team and then obviously moving the ball and creating chances. It is getting back to business as usual and getting a reaction at the same time – that won’t happen again.”

Ipswich currently sit a couple of places above the Addicks in League One and Bowyer watched their 3-0 loss to Hull City on Tuesday.

He said: “I think I heard that Tuesday night was the first time they lost at home all season, so they are obviously a good side at home. They are a good footballing side. Even though Hull won 3-0, it wasn’t a 3-0 game. The scoreline was definitely generous there to Hull.

“They are a good side, the reason why their results have been so up and down is because they have had a few injuries. There was a time when they had no strikers but now they are all back, so it is going to be a tough game. They are a good side, they are very good in the final third.”

Bowyer revealed that Akin Famewo is back training with the side and may be in the squad for Wednesday’s game against Milton Keynes Dons.

He added: “Each person you have to look at them as an individual and what they are capable of. Albie Morgan, my plan on Tuesday was to rest him, so I had no intention of actually putting him on. I wanted him to rest for Saturday because he did really well last Saturday – that was the best game I thought he played for us.”

The visit of MK Dons to The Valley on Wednesday will be played in front of 2,000 Charlton supporters it was confirmed on Friday.

Bowyer is delighted to get them back: “It’s been long overdue to get the fans back in and I’m sure we’ll welcome them with open arms because we’ve definitely missed them. Football in general is not the same without the fans, more so ours. I was speaking to someone earlier and saying to them that a big part of us getting promotion two years ago, were the fans playing a massive part in that. Hopefully we can start getting them back slowly but surely. It will help having 2,000 fans at the game on Wednesday.”
