Lee Bowyer admitted he wasn’t upset about his side’s exit from the FA Cup but had hoped for more from some of his players.
The Addicks lost 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle in a closely fought game at The Valley and the Charlton Manager bemoaned a lack of numbers in the opposition area.
Speaking after the game Bowyer said: “It was quite a quite an even game I thought. At times we moved the ball well, when we did we caused them problems. We didn’t have enough people prepared to run forward, get in the box to score a goal. We put some great balls in the box, there were not enough people in there.
“The most important thing is that we got valuable minutes in to players. We got 60 in to Chuks [Aneke] today, that’s massive.
“Am I disappointed I’m out of the cup? Not really, not in a disrespectful way because I love the cup, but the league is more important to me and always has been.”
Bowyer made eight changes from the side that beat Fleetwood Town on Tuesday but, with the Addicks' strength in depth, named a side he felt was more than capable of beating Argyle, who sit eighth in League One.
He said: “Chuks Aneke I thought did well. I thought he was a problem for them all day. Charlie Barker I thought defended really well. I said to him that today was a good learning day for him, you can’t win every challenge, his enthusiasm and his hunger was excellent.
“Apart from a couple of them no-one jumped out.”
Bowyer handed a first start to Marcus Maddison and admitted he look rusty, having not started a game since February. Bowyer said: “You can tell he is seeing the right things, he just couldn’t make it happen today.”
