WOMEN'S REPORT | Liverpool 4 Charlton 0

Charlton fell to their first defeat of the season on Sunday as Liverpool put four past the Addicks in Merseyside.

The hosts had a number of early corners and took the lead from one in the eleventh minute as Rachel Furness’ powerful header hit the back of the net.

The Addicks tried to respond immediately, and did well to get the ball to Beth Lumsden who powered down the wing and drilled in a cross, but nobody could get on the end of it.

The Reds relentlessly charged at Charlton but the Addicks remained strong, Rachel Newborough did brilliantly in the 17th minute to stifle a Liverpool attack with a well-timed sliding challenge.

Liverpool almost made it two 26 minutes in, Rhiannon Roberts’ volley just wide of the post.

Soon after, Liverpool did get their second as Jade Bailey’s effort from just inside the area found its way in at the near post.

Charlton found it hard to retain possession at the start of the second half. Katie Startup was forced to make an outstanding save as she tipped a powerful Rinsola Babajide strike over the bar.

In the 79th minute Lois Heuchan slipped her way past two Liverpool defenders and drilled in a cross, but it was cleared by Liverpool.

Furness got her second and Liverpool’s third of the game in the 83rd minute as her strike from distance found the bottom corner.

The final goal of the afternoon came in the 90th minute, Charlton failed to clear from a corner and after a scrap in the box, Kirsty Linnnett poked the ball into the back of the net.
