Bowyer: "We didn’t get the result that we probably deserved. That’s our own fault, we can’t blame anyone else for that"

Lee Bowyer refused to blame Charlton’s 2-0 loss at Lincoln City on referee Marc Edwards.

The officials allowed a very controversial goal for the Imps on the stroke of half-time but Bowyer explained that despite the poor officiating his side need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

He said: “The side that was out there today I thought did some really good things. We just didn’t get the result that we probably deserved. That’s our own fault, we can’t blame anyone else for that. The officials played a part but we should have been out of sight in the first half, two or three [goals] in my eyes.

“I thought we were by far the better team, by far but if you don’t do the right things in both boxes correctly then you are going to lose the game.

“Ok, the first goal should have never been a goal anyway, he was miles offside. Some of those decisions I saw out there today were unbelievable but they are not at fault for what we do in the opposition box. How have we not scored? How have we not scored a goal again today? As long as that keeps happening, you aren’t going to win games, it is plain and simple. You keep missing chance after chance, after chance, then they get a penalty and go in 1-0 up at half-time when they shouldn’t be.”

The Charlton Manager said he could take a lot of positives from the game, including the performances of debutant Akin Famewo and Dylan Levitt, who made his first league appearance.

He said: “I’ll take a lot of positives. I thought Dylan in his first proper league game, there was a lot to be happy in his performance – his range of passing and awareness.

"We’ll get stronger and stronger as it goes on but you can’t be coming away from here with nothing after that performance. We got from box-to-box very, very well, we moved the ball but you can’t keep missing chances.”

The game was the first since Thomas Sandgaard took over the club on Friday and Bowyer said that following the arrivals of Famewo and Ben Watson, he is pleased there is the opportunity to further strengthen what is currently a small squad.

He explained: “The positive thing now is that we can start bringing in bodies. We’ve done that already, I thought Akin (Famewo) did really well. The most important thing is that we can strengthen.”
