DONE DEAL | Two signings in two days as Akin Famewo joins the Addicks on loan

Charlton have completed the signing of Akin Famewo on a season-long loan from Norwich City.

Lee Bowyer and Steve Gallen have had the defender lined up for a number of weeks and were delighted to get the deal over the line following confirmation of Thomas Sandgaard as the club’s new owner.

The 21-year-old becomes the second signing of the Sandgaard era, following the arrival of Ben Watson at The Valley on Friday.

"I’m buzzing to be here, delighted to be part of the Addicks and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this season," said Famewo.

"I’m looking forward to getting in and meeting everyone. I’m fit and ready to go if I’m needed on Sunday."

Bowyer was pleased to add Famewo to his squad. He said: “He’s a young lad but he’s very, very good. He’s good in possession, we lost Naby [Sarr], so we had to replace him. Akin is someone who naturally can play on that [left] side, who is confident, who can step out and he can play. He can also play left back or left of a three – there is a lot of versatility with him, so he’s another good addition. Norwich speak very, very highly of him. We’re lucky to have been able to get a player like him.”

The Addicks’ new owner Sandgaard, was pleased to make Famewo his second signing in as many days, he said: “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to bring Akin Famewo to the club. Lee Bowyer and Steve Gallen have made it clear adding players in defence was important, so I’m happy that, following yesterday’s takeover, we’ve been able to move quickly to get Akin in, as I know the deal has been lined up for a while.”

Famewo was born locally in Lewisham but moved at a young age. He came through the youth system at Luton before impressing enough in a loan spell at Grimsby Town and in the Luton first team, to earn a move to Norwich City in January 2019. He signed a long-term contract with the Canaries later that year before a short loan spell at St Mirren earlier in 2020.
