Phillips: "I'm just happy that I've done my bit"

Dillon Phillips is ‘over the moon’ to be voted Player of the Year for the 2019/20 season by supporters, but is just happy to have played his part as the Addicks look to reach their goal of Championship survival.

The Addicks stopper won 53% of fans’ votes to win the accolade and joins Scott Carson, Dean Kiely, Andy Petterson, Bob Bolder, Nicky Johns and John Dunn as goalkeepers who have won the club’s annual award.

“I’m over the moon, but I’m just happy that I’ve done my bit this season,” said Phillips.

“It helps that I’ve come through the academy and I think the fans appreciate that. A few of the boys have done excellently this year as well.

“It’s nice to be recognised, I’ve played every game so far and that in itself is a good feeling for me. But we’ve got one more game to go and no one wants to win Player of the Season if you’ve been relegated so all the focus is on Wednesday. If we can do it and get over the line, then it’ll be a memorable one.”

The 25-year old continued: “There are loads of ups and downs in football. I have been told at times that I’m not good enough or not ready, so it’s just nice to be given the opportunity over the last 18 months and be accepted by the team.

“Obviously, we’ve done well in the period I’ve been in and this is a different task to the one we had last year because were trying to stay in the league, but hopefully we can do that and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Meanwhile, when asked if there were any particular saves or moments from throughout the season that stand out for him, he could not pick one, insisting instead that his job is just to help his side win important points.

“That’s your job isn’t it?” he explained.

“We make saves, that’s what we’re here to do.

“I’ve made a few decent ones and a few important ones late on, but it’s just nice to save points for the team, even if it’s just a point here or there. Hopefully I’ve done my bit.

“I’ve really enjoyed the season and, hopefully, we can finish it strong.”
