Charlton Women | Newborough on upcoming game at The Valley and representing Northern Ireland

Charlton Women play against London Bees on Sunday, March 22nd at The Valley and ahead of that game Rachel Newborough talked about an impressive 2-2 draw with Leicester City, going to University in America, playing at the Valley and representing Northen Ireland.

The Addicks bounced back from 2-1 down to draw their last match away at Leicester City but despite being satisfied with a point, Newborough still felt her team deserved more.

“We’re happy with the point in the end,” said she said, “they’re a great team. There’s a prospect of them going full time so it is good on reflection to get a point.

“We felt a bit of an injustice that we could have got all three points but it's good to get at least point and come away with something from the game.”

The Addicks currently sit bottom of the Championship but a win on Sunday at home to Crystal Palace could see them move from 11th to 7th.

“It’s been difficult, there's been a lot of changes. I think losing two big strikers in the summer is difficult but defensively as a team we’ve been brilliant. You wouldn’t imagine the work ethic and team spirit we’ve still got.

“We all still believe that we can do well for the rest of the season and hopefully get a bit of momentum when more fixtures are on every weekend.”

On the March 22nd Riteesh Mishra’s side will be playing at The Valley against London Bees: ”We are really looking forward to it.

“Last time we played at The Valley it was a tough game against Aston Villa who were unbeaten in our league so it was a difficult game.

“The experience of being at The Valley and playing on that pitch was really good quality and there were a few fans there which was great."

Newborough also had a stint in America, studying and playing football at the same time.

“I went to Boston College, did my masters out there for a year and studied business on a scholarship so it was a brilliant experience.

“You talk of the travel here, going up to Blackburn but when we were in Boston we were flying over to Miami so it was a really cool experience.

“I did struggle at times with home sickness, America is much more different than you think but it was a brilliant experience and I learned a lot."

She is also a Northern Ireland international and got another call up earlier this month. She helped her country to a third place finish last year at the Turkish Cup: ”It was the first bit of silverware that I’ve had internationally.

“We felt like we could have gone on to the final but we played against a very strong France team but that was a really great experience.”
