DONE DEAL | Charlton sign Ireland international Aiden McGeady on loan

Charlton have kicked off transfer deadline deadline day by completing the signing of Aiden McGeady on a loan until the end of the season from Sunderland.

The experienced Republic Ireland international becomes the Addicks' second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of Andre Green at the start of the month

McGeady, 33, has 95 caps for the Republic of Ireland and has played 85 games in the Championship in spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Sunderland. He also has a wealth of experience in both the Champions League and the Premier League during spells with Celtic, Everton and Spartak Moscow, respectively.

Charlton Manager Lee Bowyer said: “Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad. Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing.

“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player. Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Director of Football Steve Gallen said: “I’m pleased. He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years watching him play for Ireland and Celtic in particular. We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times. We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden.”

McGeady is set to train with his new teammates for the first time on Friday and will be available for selection for Charlton’s game against Barnsley at The Valley on Saturday.

Supporters will be able to watch his first interview as a Charlton player on Friday.
