Ajose: It’s a massive three points but now we have to focus on AFC Wimbledon

Nicky Ajose says that, following Charlton’s midweek victory at Sky Bet League One leaders Portsmouth, their focus immediately switched to Saturday’s game with AFC Wimbledon.

Ajose bagged his team’s winner at Fratton Park, volleying home a Lyle Taylor flick-on after some great work on the right flank from academy graduate George Lapslie.

In the second half, the Addicks defended brilliantly to record a “massive” three points and end Pompey’s eight-match winning run and Ajose says they are now intent on recording another victory at the weekend.

“We knew it would be a tough game and we went there with good intentions, knowing we won there last season and that we could do it again,” he said. “We got goals at good times. In the second half, we hung on but we showed good character and it’s a massive three points for us.

“I’m sure Bows [Lee Bowyer] took confidence from last season. We knew they were a good side but were beatable. They’re very direct but if you stay in the game, you’re going to be fine.

“Not many teams come to Fratton Park and win but we’ve done it. We’ll enjoy it but move onto Wimbledon on Saturday.”

Ajose, who has now bagged three goals this season, has seen his chances limited so far this campaign due to the form of Karlan Grant and Lyle Taylor.

The duo both picked up injuries in midweek and Ajose is hoping to get his chance to start, should they miss this weekend’s game.

He said: “The boys have done well this season but I’d have liked to have played more minutes during the games.

“If I had played 20 straight games, with the chances we created, I’d have scored the same amount of goals I think but the boys have done well and I’m pleased for them. All I can do is train well and when the opportunity comes try and take it.”
