Bowyer impressed by Lapslie, on Fosu’s sending off and the building of his squad

Charlton caretaker boss was delighted with his side’s much-deserved 2-1 away to Southend United yesterday.

He also talked about the benefits his squad had on the game with two players signed this week and crucial players returning from injury. Below are the key talking points.

On being able to bring on three substitutes to change the game…

“George (Lapslie) put in a good shift when he came on. The one thing George will give you, that’s 100% work rate and that’s something that we needed at the time. I thought (Darren) Pratley got a little bit tired at the end. You’ve got to remember he didn’t really have a pre-season and we chucked him in at the deep end because we had no-one fit. But George did well coming on as well, as well as Igor (Vetokele) and Tariqe (Fosu). They’re the creative players that we’ve been missing.”

On Fosu’s sending off…

“I said to Tariqe ‘I understand you are frustrated but you have to try and not react the way you did’. Listen, I know what it is like being on the pitch and reacting in ways that you shouldn’t but he’ll learn from it. He’s made a mistake and he’ll learn from it but it’s definitely going to be a big miss because we’ve only just got him back and that’s what hurts me the most.”

On his summer signings…

“I’m very happy with the players we brought it. We’ve got another game on Saturday and I think we lose a couple for that because they are on international duty but I’m definitely happy with what I’ve seen today and looking forward to next weekend.”
