Jason Pearce on what Charlton need to mount a promotion challenge next season

Jason Pearce believes that Charlton are capable of mounting another promotion challenge when the 2018/19 campaign kicks off in August.

The Addicks reached the play-offs this campaign but came up short over two legs against Shrewsbury Town

And Pearce says that the hard work needs to begin now, if the south-east Londoners hope to go one better next year.

“I’ve tasted promotion before and I want to do it again,” said Pearce. “I know the lads in the dressing room want it too.

“Now that the season is finished, it’s important that the takeover happens quickly so that we can move forward and get things in order for next season. Hopefully the club can regroup and we can have a right good go next year.

“The nucleus of the squad is good enough. Without a shadow of a doubt, we need to add some quality players. If you look at the teams that have gone up, they have got experienced League One players and ones that have played higher as well.

“We need to recruit well and I hope that I am part of that. I’d love to be here next season.”

The Addicks were beaten 2-0 over two legs by the Shrews, who finished third in the Sky Bet League One table. Pearce admitted that the Shropshire club were worthy winners of the tie.

He said: “We are all massively disappointed, as well as the fans. For me, we just weren’t good enough. Everyone gave everything; we gave our all but we weren’t good enough over the two legs and Shrewsbury deserve to be in the final.”
