Five impressive Charlton goals against Oldham Athletic

Charlton host Oldham Athletic at The Valley on Saturday and, ahead of the game, we have taken a look back at some of the best goals scored in the fixture during the last 25 years.

Valley Pass’ unrivalled archive features every single competitive Charlton goal netted in the last quarter of a century and below, in no particular order, are five impressive Addicks strikes against the Latics.

Ricky Holmes vs Oldham (17/18)

In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Charlton came out 4-3 winners in what was probably the most exciting match this fixture had produced so far. Charlton came into the game in good form having recorded nine points from 12 at the beginning of the season. With both teams yet to strike, Holmes picked up the ball on the half-way line before beating two men and rifling it into the top corner; leaving the keeper with no chance, and the traveling Addicks with open mouths.

Brendan O’Connell vs Oldham (96/97)

Charlton salvaged a point after a late equaliser away at Boundary Park in the 1996/97 season with a fantastic header from midfielder Brendan O’Connell. The midfielder, who scored an impressive 79 goals throughout his career, rose at the back post to meet the ball, and cushion his header into the far post past.

David Whyte vs Oldham (96/97)

In the same season, a less entertaining game needed a moment of brilliance from the late David Whyte to seal the points in the Addicks’ favour. Whyte did superbly to take possession in his grasp and, in the same movement, take the ball around his marker. He made a difficult situation look so easy and this particular goal will surely go down as one of the best Charlton have scored against Oldham. As well as being unable to keep Whyte out on the day, Oldham could not to gather some form and found themselves relegated that season.

John Robinson vs Oldham (94/95)

This game in August 1994 is not a game fans will want to remember. After a long trip to Oldham, Charlton suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Northern club. One moment fans could take from the game, though, was the marvellous finish from John Robinson. The Welshman capped off a great move after some magnificent passing in the build up to the goal; even if it was just a consolation.

Keith Jones vs Oldham (94/95)

Charlton’s 2-0 win over Oldham in the 1994/95 season saw the beginning of David Whyte’s scoring run against the Latics when he stretched to meet a fabulous cross and put his side in front. The Addicks extended their lead with 15 minutes left on the clock when Keith Jones punished a poor Oldham clearance. It was Whyte who supplied the cross from the left and made it easy for Jones to notch one of only six league goals he managed in 158 appearances for Charlton.
