AFC Croydon Athletic 1 Charlton 2

Charlton’s U21s progressed through to the third round of the London Senior Cup on Tuesday evening, after beating AFC Croydon Athletic 2-1 at the Mayfield Stadium.

The home side got the game underway in south London.

Bradley Tagoe registered the first shot on target for the young Addicks inside the two minutes, as his effort deflected into the palms of the Croydon goalkeeper.

Greg Cundle responded almost immediately for the home side, as Croydon hit Charlton on the break, but he saw his shot rattle the crossbar.

Shia-Lee Burnham fired Chris Lock’s side into the lead on 11 minutes. Michael Mylona played an excellent ball over the top to Burnham, who managed to get the better of his man and slot the ball home.

The visitors were forced into their first change on 30 minutes, after Reuben Reid pulled up off the ball and couldn’t continue. Josh Hebert replaced him.

Charlton were tested in the latter stages of the first half and had to sustain pressure from the home side. Kadell Daniel unleashed an effort from a free kick, that just brushed the side netting.

The young Addicks went into half time a goal to the good.

Burnham had a chance to get another goal at the start of the second half, after he carried the ball brilliantly down the field from inside his own half. He bowed down on goal, but his shot was a tame one that was easily gathered by Amadou Tangara.

Hebert doubled Charlton’s advantage on 66 minutes with a well worked goal. Kai Kobashi Enslin fed the ball into Burnham, who spotted Hebert on the edge of the box, and he unleashed a shot that nestled into the bottom corner.

The home side got themselves back into the contest on 75 minutes, as David Bremang pulled a goal back for the Rams.

Hebert had a chance late on to restore the young Addicks’ two-goal cushion as he found himself in space down the right-hand side. He let fly but couldn’t direct his effort on target.

Despite some late pressure from the home side, Charlton held firm to see out the win at the Mayfield Stadium, and progress into the third round of the London Senior Cup.

Chris Lock’s side are next in action on Tuesday, October 20th, as they travel to the Yeomans Community Stadium to take on Tonbridge Angels in the Kent Senior Cup (7.45pm BST).
