Joe Rankin-Costello was pleased with the Addicks’ hard-fought point away at West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday evening.
The 27-year-old had an immediate effect, coming on as part of a triple substitution after Callum Styles had put the home side ahead.
The midfielder was able to get on the ball and was at the heart of an improved last 30 minutes for Nathan Jones’ side, which included Tyreece Campbell scoring his fourth of the season to earn Charlton a point.
Rankin-Costello said: “In the Championship it is a difficult league, we take any point away from home as long as we go on to win our home games.
“It’s tough coming on when they’ve just scored because the fans are up and we’re on a bit of a low, so we just tried to come in and take control of the game again and luckily we did that.”
Rankin-Costello had a neat interchange with fellow substitute, Ivan Mesík, in the build-up to Charlton’s leveller.
“Ivan is a good player and sees a pass,” he explained. “I think he passed me the ball and I drove forward and slid him in and we scored from the cross, it’s good play and we got our rewards.”
The result leaves Charlton in third in the Championship after four games, level on points with Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers.
“It is the best start I’ve ever had in the Championship,” smiled Rankin-Costello. “We’ve got a good enough squad to hopefully move up the table [from where we were last season].
“We have a big squad so the lads that played tonight, if they need to rest on Saturday, hopefully the lads that, if they do come in, can be as good.”
More than 900 travelling fans played their part in Charlton securing a point and that support will be needed again next week.
Rankin-Costello said: “They helped us, they always make a difference, we just want to thank them for coming.”
