Ramsay previews Watford trip

Kayne Ramsay was delighted to make his first start back from injury on Tuesday evening, marking the occasion with a goal as the Addicks secured a point away at Turf Moor. The defender now turns his attention to Saturday’s trip to Watford (12.30pm BST).

“It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been wanting to score. It’s been a while,” he said when asked about Tuesday’s game.

The defender had been sidelined for the first two months of the season with an ankle injury but is glad to be back out on the pitch.

“Injury is always tough. As a player, that’s always tough to deal with, especially being left out of the first game of the season. It was quite a bad ankle injury, potentially even surgery. But I’ve done well in my recovery and I always tell myself to come back stronger after injury.”

“I do need to add a lot more goals to my game for sure, especially on set plays or even different types of goals. I need to add more goals to my game. Lloyd [Jones] has got three goals to start the season, and I was happy for him, and then he got the assist for my goal as well!”

Ramsay said that his strong friendship with the skipper off the pitch benefits them on it, even if it occasionally leads to the odd squabble.

“Lloyd, he’s my brother, man. He keeps me in check; I keep him in check. Off the pitch, we’re great friends. On the pitch, you see we’re always arguing, but it’s all pretty good,” he explained.

“In any successful environment, you need someone who can hold you accountable for what’s going on. It’s not always going to be good. You’ve got to be there for each other and have a hand on each other’s shoulder.”

The right back insists that there is always room for improvement within the squad, after drawing the last two games.

“When something’s going right, we’ve got to double down on it and carry on pushing. I was saying on the pitch, ‘Don’t sit off; keep going. Can we go again?’ We have a tendency to score or go one up and then drop off, as if that’s enough, and I don’t think it is. The better teams see a game out and try to go two-nil or three-nil. That’s something we’re going to keep improving and trying to do.”

Ramsay expects a tough test from Watford on Saturday. The Hornets fell to a 5-1 defeat away to Cardiff City in midweek.

“They’re obviously going to have a reaction from their last game, so we’ve got to be up for it and ready, like any other game. We can’t expect to go and get three points or a point there. We’ve got to go ahead and do what we can,” he said.

The Addicks will be backed by a sold-out away end at Vicarage Road this weekend.

“The support, it really helps. Our fans are always good. They’re always standing up, always loud and always there.”
