Conor Coventry apologised to supporters after the Addicks’ defeat at Watford on Saturday, insisting that the team’s performance was “not good enough”.
Charlton fell to a 2-0 defeat on a disappointing afternoon at Vicarage Road and the midfielder was quick to recognise that his side fell short of expectations and acknowledged the travelling supporters who occupied a sold-out away end in Hertfordshire.
“We’re disappointed,” he said.
“It’s not good enough from all of us as a group. We’re disappointed, upset and angry. We apologise to the fans because they’re feeling the same. It just wasn’t good enough.”
Although the Addicks saw a number of key opportunities come and go against the Hornets, Coventry insisted that he and his teammates needed to assess their overall performance, rather than focus only on missed chances.
“You can take your chances and the game changes, but I just don’t think we were good enough in all areas today,” he admitted.
“We could have been more clinical and maybe got a result, but we have to look at our performance rather than just that.”
With eight games now having passed since the last win against Preston North End, Coventry said the squad’s response would be key.
“It’s all about sticking together,” he said.
“The squad has been through a lot of ups and downs since I’ve been here. We have to stick together, work hard and go again. We’re going back to The Valley, where we’re still unbeaten this season, and we have to take confidence from that.”
The midfielder, who played regularly for the Republic of Ireland during the recent international break, welcomed the chance to reset before Charlton’s next test, which comes in the form of Norwich City next weekend, with no midweek fixture hampering recovery.
“I’ve played a lot of games in the last few weeks, and you do feel it, but that’s part of our job,” Coventry insisted.
“It’ll be nice to have a bit of a reset. It’s about doing the right things, getting some rest, then getting our minds on it and putting in the best performance we can on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, Coventry also thanked the travelling supporters, who made their voices heard throughout at Vicarage Road, despite going home disappointed.
“As soon as you come out, you can see it’s a great away end and they’re making noise,” he said.
“We know we let them down today. Thank you for your support, and we apologise for the performance.”
