Charlton 0 Man City 1
Charlton Women produced a spirited display against Man City, pushing the visitors all the way despite a narrow defeat.
Charlton started positively, creating two early chances, with the first falling to Hawa Cissoko. Jodie Hutton’s back post corner was headed down by Lucia Lobato to Cissoko, but her left footed shot was blocked on the line.
That was quickly followed by a solo run from Cassandra Korhonen, who broke with speed from her own half to the edge of the City box, before firing wide of the post.
Charlton continued to attack with confidence. In the 22nd minute, last week’s goalscorer Jodie Hutton registered their first effort on Eartha Cumings’ goal, forcing an excellent save from the City goalkeeper.
The opening goal then came against the run of play. After Grace Clinton was brought down in attack, City were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal, which Alex Greenwood converted.
SECOND HALF
City began the second half brightly, forcing Sophie Whitehouse into a smart double save. She first denied Gracie Prior, then kept out Grace Clinton’s effort from the rebound.
The visitors then rung the changes, bringing on Niamh Charles, Bunny Shaw and Yui Hasegwa in an attempt to kill the game.
It was Charlton however, who created the next chance in the 65th minute. Korhonen met Jodie Hutton’s whipped cross but could only direct her effort into Cumings’ gloves.
In the closing stages, Bunny Shaw’s clever glancing header nearly troubled Sophie Whitehouse but drifted just wide of the post.
