Zheng Zhi signed a permanent deal at The Valley two days before the start of the 2007/08 season - and at the same time as Izale McLeod joined the Addicks.
Fans will know a lot more about Zheng, who played 12 games for Charlton on loan in 2006/07, scoring once against Newcastle United.
Alan Pardew beat off interest from several Premier League clubs to convince the two-time China player of the year to return to SE7 despite the club's relegation from the top flight.
The versatile international, who can play anywhere in midfield as well as a second striker and in defence, has signed a two-year contract. The deal is subject to a medical and international clearance, but no problems are expected.
Zheng already has a work permit until 2010, and Charlton will pay Shandong Luneng an initial £1.25m, with a further £750,000 based on appearances.
He is one of the most instantly recognisable figures in Asian football and the first Chinese player to represent the Addicks.
Zheng finished as runner-up to Matt Holland in the player of the year poll after chipping in with nine goals over the course of the 2007/08 campaign.
