The 2008/09 season saw Sam build on his establishment as a first-team regular at The Valley.
A tricky winger able to play on either flank, Sam can cause opposition defences a plethora of problems on his day.
The Leeds-born ace, a product of Charlton's academy, featured in 42 games last term, and although he will have been disappointed by failing to find the back of the net, he did claim several assists for his teammates.
2007/08 had proved to be a memorable year for the ever-smiling star as he played in 32 games for the Addicks, scoring three goals en route.
Following a loan spell at Leyton Orient in early 2004, Sam squeezed just about everything into his 2004/05 campaign when he deservedly scooped the young player of the year award, a first England U20 call-up, playing and scoring against Russia at The Valley, and a Premier League debut in a dramatic final-day match that saw rivals Crystal Palace relegated.
The arrival of Darren Ambrose in 2005/06, plus the form of Jerome Thomas and Dennis Rommedahl, meant competition for a place on the flanks was intense, and a broken foot sustained in training also set Sam back.
He started 2006/07 on loan with Sheffield Wednesday before returning to The Valley, and he also played twice during a temporary spell with Southend United.
