Perkins and Tuna seal late win
Late goals from Lewis Perkins and Tamer Tuna earned a youthful Charlton a 2-0 win at Bromley on Wednesday night.
Substitute Perkins opened the scoring four minutes from time with his first goal in senior Charlton colours and Tuna doubled the lead from the penalty spot less than a minute later.
The striker had been fouled in the box by Joe Vines after a clever back-heel by Perkins and confidently sent Jamie Butler the wrong way.
The Addicks, who fielded four triallists and a clutch of promising youngsters, grew into the game against their Blue Square South hosts.
And at the back there was a solid first outing for experienced keeper Andy Marshall, on trial after leaving Aston Villa in the summer.
And when he was beaten in the opening period there was a superb piece of last gasp defending from Yado Mambo who got back to deny Steve Ferguson by flinging his sizeable frame in the way of his goalbound shot.
Mambo and Miguel Llera did well in the centre of defence for the visitors who notably stepped up a gear in the second period with Alex Stavrinou and Freddie Warren combining tenacity, energy and enterprise in equal measure.
For Perkins it was a handy 27-minute cameo as Charlton capitalised on an awful error from the brilliantly-named Harrison Dunk.
Indeed it was a slam-Dunk for Tuna as he gleefully collected a misplaced clearance from the left-back and teed up Perkins who lifted the ball over Butler and in off the left post.
The striker then teed up Tuna, who was caught by Vines, and the frontman picked himself up to complete the scoring from 12 yards.
The team news of note for the visitors was the inclusion between the posts of triallist keeper Marshall.
The former England U21 stopper is best known for his time at Norwich City and the 35-year-old has also spent spells at Ipswich Town, Millwall and Coventry City among others.
The second new face was triallist Guillaume Norbert, a former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder who also spent time at Arsenal in his early career.
The 29-year-old has most recently been with Le Havre in his homeland and has also spent spells with Lorient, Angers and Nantes.
There was also another chance up front for Icelander Gunnar Thorvaldsson while James Mulley was at right-back.
Llera was the most senior player on show and he partnered Mambo, one of six youth products in the starting XI.
Left-back Joe Carter completed the backline with Ben Davisson ahead of him in midfield. Alex Stavrinou and second-year scholar Freddie Warren were in the engine room with Tamer Tuna up front.
The substitutes' bench comprised young keeper Brandon Hall, defenders Connor Morris, first-year scholar duo Jordan Cousins and Semi Ajayi, midfielder Steve Camacho and strikers Lewis Perkins and Tosan Popo.
The hosts fielded Warren McBean, who netted twice for the Addicks in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Chelsea last term, up front.
Marshall warmed his gloves for the first time on three minutes, pouching an effort from Dunk, who had surged forward from the left.
Marshall dived to his right to keep out a shot on the run from McBean five minutes later and the keeper patted down an angled effort from Nicky Greene after a fine interchange between the winger and Salifou Ibrahima.
The best chance of the match arrived in the 18th minute - with Mambo miraculously denying the home side the lead.
After an unlucky ricochet in midfield left Warren and Stavrinou stranded, Ibrahima filtered an inch-perfect ball to Ferguson who nipped away from Marshall before taking aim from the left.
The striker must have thought he had scored but the never-say-die Mambo hurled his substantial frame in the way of the shot and turned the ball behind for a corner.
Mambo was well placed again in the 26th minute - to spare the blushes of Davisson whose woefully short back-pass let in Greene to surge away from Llera and pull the ball back towards Ferguson.
Mambo read the danger well to clear in front of the striker and Charlton breathed again.
A good run from Mulley on the half hour allowed Norbert to drag the ball in from the right and Thorvaldsson swivelled to shoot over from just outside the box.
Mulley sent in another dangerous centre five minutes before the break and Davisson, in space on the left, volleyed back across but the ball was blocked and cleared.
That was the last action of the opening period, and at the start of the second a cross from the right was just too high for Thorvaldsson with Warren prodding a shot over in the aftermath.
The visitors were much improved after the break, and were starting to pass the ball around nicely.
Perkins and Morris replaced Thorvaldsson and Mulley after 63 minutes and after Tuna and Stavrinou twice swapped passes after a terrific spell of build-up play, keeper Butler seized the ball as the midfielder tried to flick it over him.
Tuna, more influential as the game went on, then fed in Warren whose clipped effort floated wide, before Popo replaced Norbert.
Mambo got in a fine interception to foil McBean as he foraged through nine minutes from time, and the striker then planted a free header over the bar following a teasing centre two minutes later.
But it was Charlton that seized the advantage on 86 minutes with Perkins on target.
After a poor pass from Dunk, Tuna snatched the ball and slipped it through to Perkins who clipped the ball over the keeper and in off the left post.
It was quickly 2-0 as Perkins returned the favour.
After chasing a long ball into the left corner of the box, the young striker had the presence of mind to backheel the ball to the arriving Tuna, who was ploughed down by Vines.
It was a blatant penalty - Tuna stuck in a Vine if you like! - and Tuna stepped up to find the bottom corner from 12 yards.
There was time for Greene to send a deflected free-kick wide, but Marshall's clean sheet capped a good evening's work for the Addicks.
