Final countdown for DVD
Some said it shouldn't happen, others that it never would.
It also prompted one of the few stories about off-the-field events at The Valley to make national newspaper headlines in the past year or so.
But despite all the obstacles in its way and five months later than originally planned, Charlton's Championship Goals 2007-09 DVD is in the final stages of production and is set to hit the Superstore shelves in time for Christmas.
Head of club development Rick Everitt admitted: "Even I was beginning to think we would never get it made, but we have some good friends in the TV industry and thanks to one of them in particular, Jonathan Grade, we finally have a production I am happy to commend to fans.
"I am very grateful to Jonathan for coming to the rescue after we had been let down elsewhere, and he has done a great job in difficult circumstances."
The compilation runs to just over two hours and includes every goal, for and against, from Charlton's first-team matches in 2007/08 and 2008/09, as well as extended highlights from some games covered by network television.
The action includes three victories over Crystal Palace and Valley legend Chris Powell's remarkable scoring swansong against Coventry City in May 2008.
The project was ridiculed in some quarters, including the Sun newspaper, for recounting the Addicks' disastrous 2008/09 campaign, but Everitt pointed out: "We had previously produced video records of the seasons when we were relegated in 1990, 1999 and 2007.
"In any case, we won 17 matches in 2007/08 and I don't see any reason to wipe them from the record. I can't pretend 2008/09 makes happy viewing, but I don't think we can pretend it didn't happen either. Overall, there are still plenty of memorable goals and games to enjoy here."
Around 325 fans paid £20 upfront for the DVD, underwriting about two-thirds of the cost, to enable the project to proceed, and their copies will be sent out by first-class post as soon as they arrive at The Valley, which is expected to be in just over a fortnight's time.
But fans who missed out on that offer - or perhaps were sceptical the DVD would ever be made - can now guarantee their copy for Christmas by ordering from the commercial centre post free.
Championship Goals 2007-09 is available to UK customers for £20 on 0871 226 1905 (calls cost 10p per minute from a BT landline; calls from mobiles and other networks may cost more) and is expected to be available in the Superstore at the Millwall game on December 19th.
Unfortunately, the club is currently unable to take online orders for this DVD.
