Mooney extends Addicks loan

Striker David Mooney has extended his loan spell at Charlton from Reading for a second month, the club confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

David Mooney, who has extended his loan at Charlton, opens the scoring against the Pirates on Tuesday night

The Irishman, who has netted in his last two Valley matches, will remain in SE7 until December 28th.

The month-long spell will include the away trip to Brentford on that date, and will see the 25-year-old remain at Charlton over the busy festive period, although the Royals have a 24-hour recall clause.

Mooney fired the Addicks in front against Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night, showing predatory prowess to turn the loose ball home after Deon Burton's fourth-minute shot was parried by Mikkel Andersen.

And, after the hosts had surrendered their two-goal cushion against the Pirates, the striker's header off the crossbar and subsequent tussle with Andersen led to skipper Nicky Bailey giving Charlton a lead that the Addicks would not relinquish for a second time.

Mooney netted his first goal for the club in the 5-1 win against Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday, November 14th, following up to score after a Bailey free-kick had been headed into his path.

Ineligible for Charlton's FA Cup first-round shock exit at Northwich Victoria, Mooney started his first game for the club in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie at Southampton.

He arrived at the Addicks on an emergency loan from Reading on October 16th, making his debut from the bench in the 2-1 Valley win over Huddersfield Town the following day.

Substitute outings followed at Gillingham and Carlisle United before he got his starting chance at St Mary's.

In the last three games he has partnered top scorer Deon Burton up front, and although he was sacrificed after just over half an hour at Yeovil Town on Saturday following Sam Sodje's sending-off, he remained in the starting line-up when Bristol Rovers arrived in SE7.

Speaking about the possibility of a loan extension earlier this week, Mooney, who has played seven games for the club, said: "I'm here until next Tuesday after the Brighton game, but hopefully it'll be extended. I've just got to wait and see what happens but obviously I need to get it sorted.

"It's one of those things where I'm not playing at Reading so if I can come here and do well during the loan period, and Charlton want to sign me, then I'd talk it through with my family and see what we do. Brighton is my last game unless things get sorted out."

After Brighton, Mooney will be hoping to continue his fine form at The Valley when Southend United are the next visitors on December 5th.

Mooney has scored twice in his last three games

He will hope to face Stockport County, a club he represented twice last season on loan before injury intervened, a week later. But the senior game at Edgeley Park will be a first for the striker, whose two matches for the Hatters were both away from the club's Cheshire base.

After that there is the small matter of Millwall at home on December 19th, and Swindon Town - one of his two away opponents when at Stockport - loom on Boxing Day before the trip to Griffin Park ends his second month.

Dubliner Mooney played for Shamrock Rovers in his homeland but it was at Longford Town that he started to make a name for himself.

In his third season at Flanacre Park, he helped himself to 22 goals in 38 games to top the League of Ireland scoring charts despite his side's relegation.

It earned him the Football Association of Ireland Player of the Year award as Longford also reached the FA Cup final, losing 1-0 to Cork City.

Cork would be his next destination and he hit 20 more goals before Reading came calling in August last year.

The striker has played just four games for the Royals, scoring his first two goals for the club in a Carling Cup win against Burton Albion earlier this season.

After his spell at Stockport, he ended last term at Norwich City, scoring three goals in nine outings but suffering relegation with the Canaries at the hands of Charlton at The Valley on the last day.
