Charlton U18s 3
Woking (FA Youth Cup, R2) 1
Tuna's three of a kind trumps Cards
Tamer Tuna hit a hat-trick as Charlton set up an FA Youth Cup third round tie with Chelsea by beating Woking 3-1 on Wednesday night.
The impressive striker struck twice in the opening 10 minutes to leave Woking facing an uphill battle.
Ola Sogbanmu gave the Cards hope in the second minute of the second half after some sloppy play at the back.
But the night belonged to Tuna, and he cracked home a low shot in the 52nd minute to complete his treble.
Woking had actually made the better start, and had Rob Carr driven home a great early chance, things might have been different.
But Tuna was too hot to handle on the night; a predatory shark among Cards if you like.
From Charlton's first attack of real menace, he collected a through pass from Jordan Anderson and strode forward before producing a clinical finish from the edge of the box.
Two minutes later he latched onto a poor back header from Aaron Gough and crashed home a second.
Home skipper Carl Jenkinson would have delighted development coach Damian Matthew just as much as his star striker by making a brilliant goal-saving block from Ollie Palmer just before the break.
The Cards never folded despite their early set-back and grabbed a goal back two minutes into the second half as Sogbanmu eventually shot home after some messy play from both sides.
After Liam Bellamy headed an immediate chance wide for the hosts, Tuna re-opened the two-goal advantage in the 57th minute, again showing brilliant poise to control a Lewis Perkins pass, before producing a precision strike into the bottom left corner.
Binks made a fine double save to foil Callum Eagle as the visitors pressed for a way back into the game, and substitute Will Hammond's fine curling effort deserved better than to come back off the bar.
But Charlton had done enough to beat their spirited rivals and can now look forward to an enticing derby against their big-spending London rivals.
In terms of team news Damian Matthew made just one change for the visit of the Cards from the opening round win over Gillingham.
Freddie Warren started on the right of midfield so Joe Carter dropped back to left-back with Connor Morris making way.
Warren's inclusion meant Bellamy operated on the opposite left flank.
Otherwise the team was unchanged from the fine 3-0 win against the Gills with Jack Binks, fresh from his appearance on the bench at the FA Cup clash at Northwich Vicroria, between the posts.
Skipper Jenkinson was at right-back with Carter on the left and Yado Mambo and the promising U16 England skipper Jordan Cousins formed the central defensive pairing.
Towering duo Anderson and Harry Pell were in central midfield with long-time pairing Tuna and Perkins up front.
Morris was on the bench alongside fellow first-year scholars Tosan Popo and Stephen Camacho, and there was also a place in reserve for U16 winger Callum Harriott. Another rookie, U16 keeper George Howard, completed the quintet.
Woking had come through five rounds just to take their place at The Valley, defeating Worthing, Tooting & Mitcham, Molesey, Ashford Town (Middlesex) and Dagenham & Redbridge.
Decked out all in gold and cheered on by a healthy visiting contingent, the Cards had the first chance of the evening in the second minute - and Carr ought to have put his side in front.
The winger found himself all alone on the left side of the box after Palmer had veered across and slipped a neat ball into his path. But he couldn't get any real substance on his shot and a great chance skewed wide of Binks' right upright.
Four minutes later the visitors went close with another effort as Sogbanmu controlled a ball in from the right on his chest and spun to volley across goal and wide.
It was a good start for the Surrey side - but Charlton struck first with their first serious raid of the game.
Anderson threaded a ball through from just inside the Woking half and Tuna's clever touch took the ball away from his marker before the striker dispatched a low shot into the bottom corner.
And Tuna struck again two minutes later.
After a hoisted ball forward Cards skipper Aaron Gough couldn't get enough purchase on his back header and the sprightly Tuan sped away, composed himself and crunched a shot past Matt Pegler.
The poor Woking keeper had had little to do, except pick the ball out of the back of his net, but Charlton were already in a strong position.
Pegler did serve note of his capabilities soon afterwards when he made a smart low save at his near post to keep out a well-struck angled drive from Perkins.
Pell also fired a shot high into the Jimmy Seed Stand while at the other end Binks saved made his first save of the evening, routinely keeping out a header from Gough at a free-kick.
A bone-crunching - but perfectly fair - challenge from Pell left Carr in agony on the turf and saw the midfielder drive forward with real intent before Bellamy was eventually dispossessed.
Carr removed his left boot before hobbling off and after much attention on the sidelines was unable to continue as George Frith came on in his place.
Before the change took place Tuna sent Perkins down the right channel with a glorious pass, but sadly there was nobody in the middle to complete a flowing move.
Anderson headed a Pell corner inches over the bar soon afterwards but Jenkinson preserved Charlton's two-goal lead with a superb intervention.
The hosts couldn't deal with a ball in from the right and when it sat up perfectly for Palmer the Cards looked set to halve the deficit.
But the striker had reckoned without the desire and sheer bloody-mindedness of the Addicks skipper who hurtled across and made a goal-saving block.
First-team full-back Kelly Youga produced a similar moment of defensive quality against Milton Keynes Dons in the League One encounter at the weekend, with Charlton going on to win convincingly.
And the hosts might have added a third seconds before the break when the influential Pell bustled through midfield again and slipped the ball sideways to Bellamy whose low drive was saved by the advancing Pegler.
That saved proved doubly important for the visitors as they begun the second half just like they had started the first.
And this time they cashed in when it mattered as, following a clipped pass forward that caused all kinds of problems in the box.
Sogbanmu initially missed his kick as the ball reared up, but when covering defender Carter failed to deal with the ball, the striker had the presence of mind to side-step the defender and dispatch a low drive past Binks.
It was all Woking deserved for their efforts but they were almost breached straight from the kick-off as Warren's cross from the right bypassed Tuna in the middle before Bellamy put a gilt-edged header chance wide of the left upright.
The hard-working winger made amends in the 52nd minute, however, by playing a big part in Charlton's third goal.
Collecting the ball at the edge of his own box, Bellamy showed good strength to hold off a hassling opponent before spreading the play wide in some style.
The ball eventually reached Perkins on the right and his intelligent lay-off fed Tuna who took one excellent touch before dispatching a terrific low shot into the bottom corner for his hat-trick goal.
Perkins rifled a shot into the side netting after great approach play from Tuna and the irrepressible Tuna was involved again in a move that saw his strike partner's shot fumbled behind by Pegler.
At the other end Anson Cousins couldn't get anything on a header after a wildly miss-hit shot had found him in space in the box.
Bellamy burst forward and curled a shot narrowly over the bar before young winger Harriott entered the fray for Anderson.
He went straight to the left and Warren switched into the middle with Bellamy trotting over to the right.
Tuna curled a free-kick into the wall while Binks made a fine double stop to foil Callum Eagle midway through the half.
The keeper got down well to palm away a header from the defender, and then reacted swiftly to deny the same player's hooked follow-up effort.
Pell found the North Upper with his volleyed effort from a Tuna pass while Tom Topham dragged a shot wide from the edge of the box, after dispossessing the striker deep in Charlton territory.
Stephen Camacho came on for his FA Youth Cup debut for the closing ten minutes, replacing Bellamy, and Tuna's looping header at Pell corner had to be flipped over by the back-tracking Pegler.
Pell fired a free-kick over after his burst was cynically ended at the edge of the area, and Tosan Popo replaced the tireless Perkins seven minutes from time.
Mambo produced a telling block from Sogbanmu in the closing stages as the visitors, who never gave up on the night, sought a second goal.
And they were a whisker away from doing just that two minutes from the end as lively substitute Will Hammond cut in from the right and curled in a terrific shot that beat Binks all ends up before crashing back off the bar.
Eagle was quickest to the rebound but his follow-up header flew over, leaving him beating the turf in frustration.
Popo's low shot was held by Pegler and there was no more significant action as the hosts saw out the game to seal their tie with Chelsea.
And Tuna left the pitch with a big smile on his face, clutching the match-ball as a memory of his fine night.
