Deadline Day signings Rod Fanni and Yaya Sanogo both picked up the phone to former Addicks prior to making their moves to SE7 on Monday evening.

Fanni, an ex-France international who has played over 300 matches in Ligue 1 - most notably for Marseille, which also saw him play in the Champions League, spoke to one of his old teammates from the Stade Velodrome.

Sanogo, meanwhile, was given some advice by a current Gunner that enjoyed a short stint at The Valley last season, before heading back to the Emirates to become a mainstay in Arsene Wenger’s side.

And Charlton’s latest recruits said that discussing the club with their friends only confirmed that moving to South London would be a good decision to make.

Fanni said: “My friend Souleymane Diawara used to played here. I called him and he told me about this club and when he used to play here.

“He told me a lot about the club and I have a good idea about it now, which is why I was very happy to come here.

“For me, this will be a good experience in my career and I really also want to help the team to stay in the Championship. I really want to work hard for this club.”

Sanogo, who spent the first part of the season on loan at Dutch giants Ajax, said: “I spoke to my friend Francis Coquelin and he told me a few things about the club. He said that this was a good club and that is would be a good choice for me to come here.

“My first day here was very good. I met all of my teammates the manager and I am happy to sign with Charlton. I want to help us to stay in the league and I will work very hard to try and do that."
