Taylor Maloney finds the net for the U18s but they are pegged back by an 89th-minute equaliser at Sparrows Lane

George Jones reports

Charlton’s U18s were undone by an 89th-minute equaliser as Barnsley snatched a late point at Sparrows Lane on Saturday morning.

The Addicks had led through Taylor Maloney’s second-half strike but Sergei Baltacha’s side were pegged back a minute from the end when the Tykes squeezed the ball in from a tight angle.

Charlton started well and came close to breaking the deadlock when Sam Nwosu headed just over the bar from Alfie Doughty’s corner.

A clever free-kick routine ended with Albie Morgan firing narrowly wide from 20 yards and Alex Willis then glanced a header just off target.

A fierce Morgan drive was deflected behind for a corner just before the break and, shortly after the restart, Maloney saw a shot well blocked by the Tykes’ defence.

Willis raced clear on goal shortly afterwards but a vital intervention from Barnsley’s goalkeeper forced him wide before he curled his effort just wide.

The Addicks’ goal finally arrived on 79 minutes. Possession was squared to Maloney on the edge of the box and, after taking a touch, he picked out the bottom corner with his left foot.

It looked like being enough to secure the points but the visitors hit back one minute from time. A cross came in from the left and the Tykes’ number seven was in the right place to steer it over the goal-line. Though it did not hit the net, it was adjudged to have crossed the line and the match finished all-square.
