Addicks fall to defeat in their second match of the season as Crewe find the net twice in the game's final quarter

Charlton’s U18s suffered a 2-0 defeat against Crewe Alexandra in their second match of the new Professional Development League 2 South season.

Sergei Baltacha’s young Addicks failed to impose themselves on the game and were limited to a number of half-chances before the hosts grabbed two goals in the last 20 minutes to claim all three points.

Alex Willis directed a Mustapha Bangura-Williams cross wide of the near post in the early exchanges before Sulaiman Bah fired an effort straight at the Crewe stopper from the edge of the box.

The striker had another sight at goal when he received the ball in space on the left-hand side of the box, but his angled strike was dragged across the keeper and narrowly wide of the upright.

Taylor Maloney saw a first-time shot from the edge of the box well saved before the break and Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu drew a good save form the Crewe custodian after the break from a left-wing cross.

With 18 minutes left on the clock, the home side took the lead. A delivery from the right was met by the head of Crewe’s tall striker and, although Ashley Maynard-Brewer was able to propel the initial effort, the ball fell straight back to the forward who finished with his header at the second time of asking.

At the other end, Ben Dempsey adjusted himself well to send a volley just wide of the near post for the Londoners, but Crewe put the game beyond doubt in the 91st minute with a free-kick that nestled in the bottom right-hand corner from 20 yards.

Charlton: Maynard-Brewer, Bangura-Williams, Simpson, Nwosu, Zemura, Maloney, Sarpong-Wiredu, Morgan (Dempsey 63), Bah (Isiaka 67), Doughty, Willis.

Subs (not used): Prall, Birch Pollard.
