Sulaiman Bah bags a 94th-minute winner as Charlton edge a seven-goal thriller at Sparrows Lane
George Jones reports
Sulaiman Bah bagged a 94th-minute winner for Charlton’s U18s as they edged a seven-goal thriller against Ipswich Town at Sparrows Lane on Saturday morning.
The late strike was Bah’s second goal of the game and added to first-half efforts from triallist Akeel Francis and Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu.
The Addicks broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Bah fired a low cross into the box and Francis’ scuffed finish looped over the Ipswich goalkeeper and into the net.
Two minutes later, it was 2-0. A straight through ball from Sarpong-Wiredu set Bah clear on goal and he slotted into the net from the edge of the box with a calm finish.
The Tractor Boys pulled one back midway through the first period when their number nine headed home a corner at the far post but the Addicks restored their two-goal advantage before the break.
It came in similar fashion to Ipswich’s goal; this time it was Sarpong-Wiredu who rose highest at a corner to power a header into the net.
The first-half drama was not over, though, as the visitors were reduced to 10 men for a last-man foul. They got themselves back into the game on the hour mark, however.
Their number nine cut inside and picked out the bottom corner and, five minutes later, the 10 men restored parity when a cut-back was swept home from close range.
Despite the best efforts of both sides, it looked like neither of them were going to be able to grab a winner but that changed in the 94th minute when Bah struck his second goal of the day.
Again it came from a corner. The attacking midfielder positioned himself on the edge of the six-yard box and held off his man to volley Alfie Doughty’s corner into the back of the net.
