Charlton Deaf FC match reports

Read all about the highs and lows of the Addicks deaf team during the 2005/06 season below.

English Deaf Football Men's League Championship North v South Play-off

Sunday, May 28th

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2 Whitley Bay Deaf 4

Charlton fell short in their bid to become national champions at the end of last month as Whitley Bay deservedly took the spoils.

In a match played at a neutral venue in Nottingham, Charlton were without holidaying player-manager Dave Nelson so Mark Gill and Eze Ani took charge.

The Addicks started strongly but failed to cash in on their dominance and it was Whitley Bay who took the lead when a free-kick was headed past Oliver Eadsforth.

Jonny Nelson twice went close after latching on to long balls from Jonny Neal and it was Neal who set up the leveller, sending in a corner for striker Duncan Rowley to head home.

But the North Easterners were back in front before the break as another set-piece was converted.

Chris Drew and Hux Omar replaced Jermaine Kinsman and Rowley at the interval and, just like the opening period, Charlton started on the offensive.

Again they failed to make the most of their superiority in the opening 15 minutes however, and the next segment of the game belonged to their opponents who notched twice from two more set-plays to take firm control.

Gill gave his side hope from the penalty spot after man of the match Paul Clark was chopped down in the box but Whitley held firm in the closing stages to complete the win.

Charlton: Eadsforth, Neal (Draper 75), McGee, Kennard, Platt, Clark, Coombes, Gill, Kinsman (Drew 46), Rowley (Omar 46), J Nelson. Subs (not used): Canatan, Halil.

Derek Mead Memorial Cup Final

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0 Dockland 1

Charlton missed out on the silverware after an entertaining affair at Croydon Athletic FC.

They started brightly and Simeon Campbell thought he had given them the lead only for his hopes to be dashed by an offside flag.

Dockland scored what proved to be the decisive goal before the interval when a cross was volleyed past keeper Tom Platt.

Charlton, for whom Mark Gill impressed, responded well after the turnaround and saw two penalty claims turned down as Dockland held firm for the win.

Charlton: Platt, Gill, McGee, Kennard (Draper 46), Coombes, Stone, Ani, Omar (D Nelson 75), Clarke (M Nelson 55), J Nelson, Campbell.

Brockley & District League - Division Two

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2 Trinity 3

Charlton closed their league season with defeat despite taking a two-goal lead inside the opening 12 minutes at Coldharbour Leisure Centre.

Less than two minutes had elapsed when winger Paul Clark sped down the flank and cut in to fire the Addicks in front.

And Clark turned provider 10 minutes later, picking out striker Jonny Nelson to finish emphatically.

Despite controlling the rest of the half, the hosts were punished for a lack of concentration as Trinity halved the deficit shortly before the interval.

A shot that squirmed through the grasp of keeper Duncan Rowley 10 minutes after the restart made it all square before centre-back Mark Gill was forced to leave the action with an ankle injury.

Coombes was a whisker away from putting Charlton back in front when his shot fizzed just wide but a reshaped home line-up was still adjusting when Trinity notched the decisive goal.

The home side dominated the closing 20 minutes and Nelson almost salvaged a point only to see his drive fly narrowly wide.

Charlton: Rowley, Draper, Kennard, Gill (D Nelson 65), Halil, Clark, Omar, Coombes, Kinsman, J Nelson, Canatan.

English Deaf Football Southern League

Colchester 2 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2

Charlton were crowned Southern League champions after honours finished even in Essex against their title rivals.

Colchester needed to win by two clear goals to snatch the title and the game was played at a high tempo from the opening whistle.

The hosts, with the wind at their backs, took the lead with a lob over keeper Oliver Eadsforth but defender Tom Platt pulled his side level on the half hour with a thunderous 60-yard drive.

Dave Nelson entered the action after an hour and the player-boss made an immediate impact, exchanging passes with son Jonny and firing his side in front.

Colchester levelled from the penalty spot after a foul by Platt but it was purely academical as Charlton clinched top spot by two points.

They will now face the winners of the Northern League in a play-off on either April 13th or 14th or May 20th or 21st.

Charlton: Eadsforth, Draper, Halil, McGee, Platt, Drew, Coombes, Omar, Clarke, Tayloe (D Nelson 60), J Nelson.

Brockley & District League Division Two

Prince Albert Regulars 3 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 1

Charlton's preparations for this league match were hit as Jonny Nelson and Simeon Klein suffered the effects of illness.

Nelson soldiered on from the start while Klein watched from the sidelines as the visitors kicked off with 10 men.

But the shorthanded side took a surprise lead within five minutes.

Simeon Campbell was the beneficiary after collecting a throughball but the hosts were quickly back on terms and a 15-minute flurry saw them move 3-1 up.

Klein entered the fray after the break and Charlton were largely on top in the second period with Jason Taylor and Campbell spurning decent openings.

At the other end Duncan Rowley, who had turned up to watch only to find himself in goal, made some good stops and Hux Omar and Mark Gill defended stoutly.

Charlton: Rowley, Draper, Gill, Omar, Clark, J Nelson, Ani, Nelson, Klein, Taylor, Campbell.

Wilts & Dorset 0 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 6

Charlton were in fine form in the hilly surrounds of Salisbury as they racked up this impressive win.

Opting to attack up the slope in the opening period, Charlton weathered an early storm before Hux Omar teed up Jason Coombes to give the Addicks a 15th-minute lead.

Winger Jason Taylor cashed in on a blunder from the home keeper to make it 2-0 before the break and the visitors ran away with it in the second half.

Jonny Nelson added a third from the penalty spot after being upended in the box and although Jermaine Kinsman left the action with a nasty gash to his ankle, his replacement, player boss Dave Nelson, struck twice in quick succession.

His first came thanks to a looping header at a Coombes corner and he politely shrugged off a teammate to score number five.

Dave Nelson then set up son Jonny to chip the home keeper and complete the rout.

Charlton: Eadsforth, Draper, McGee, Halil, Platt, Taylor, Drew, Coombes, Omar, Kinsman (D Nelson 60), J Nelson.

Brockley & District League - Derek Mead Memorial Cup

Crown 4 Charlton Deaf FC 3

Charlton's standing in the competition was out of their hands after they lost this seven-goal thriller.

Crown grabbed a controversial opener and although a visiting rally was capped when Jonny Nelson set up Simeon Campbell to equalise, the hosts netted again before the break.

Hux Omar switched into midfield as Charlton changed their shape in the second period and Campbell profited from more good work from Nelson to level things up at two apiece.

Campbell then claimed his hat-trick with Charlton's third leveller of the game, after Crown had retaken the lead, but the game ended on a sour note as the home side notched a late winner.

An offside decision was overruled by the referee and the ball eventually ended up in the back of the Addicks net.

Charlton, for whom Tom Platt excelled, must how hope rivals Valley do not win by two clear goals against Prince Albert A if they are to advance to the final.

Charlton: Eadsworth, Draper, Omar, D Nelson (Klien 46), Platt, Clark, Coombes, Ani, M Nelson, Campbell, J Nelson. Sub (not used): Taylor.

Sporting Dulwich 6 Charlton Deaf FC 3

Charlton never fully recovered after playing more than half of this match with just 10 men.

Transportation problems curtailed Richard Kennard's role until he arrived during the second half with his side already 2-1 down.

The shorthanded visitors had actually taken the lead when Eze Ani set up Jonny Nelson to score, and the striker had another effort chalked off before Dulwich levelled and an own goal from Stephen Draper turned things around.

Kennard's arrival coincided with the concession of two more goals in quick succession as the hosts took firm control.

Paul Clark cut the deficit to 4-2 and the hosts had two more efforts disallowed before a second own goal, this time from Mark Gill, strengthened Sporting's lead.

Simeon Campbell hit back again but it was the home side that completed the scoring near the end.

Charlton: Eadsworth, Klien, Gill, McGee, Draper, Clark, Ani, Campbell, Stone, J Nelson, Kennard.

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 4 Colchester Deaf FC 1

Centre-back Richard Kennard was the unlikely hat-trick hero as Charlton won their third successive Southern League match on Saturday to take over at the top.

The hosts, playing at Charlton's Sparrow's Lane training complex, had to start with just 10 men, with the late-arriving Jermaine Kinsman joining the action after 25 minutes.

By this stage the home side was a goal down but a rousing half-time team-talk galvanised the Addicks into action.

Kennard headed level from a Jason Coombes corner and the duo combined again - albeit inadvertently - when a Coombes mis-kick fell kindly for Kennard to lash home a second.

Coombes completed a hat-trick of assists when another flag-kick was headed in by Kennard for his treble and Kinsman raced away to set up Dave Nelson for the fourth goal late on.

Charlton: Platt, Halil, Kennard, Hirshman, Draper, Clark, Coombes, Gill, Kinsman, D Nelson, J Nelson.

Brockley & District League - Derek Mead Memorial Cup

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 4 Valley 1

Super Simeon Campbell fired home a four-goal salvo as Charlton came from behind to edge closer to the cup final.

Valley opened the scoring on the half hour but Campbell drew his side level moments before the interval after some neat footwork.

The hosts then went in front soon after the restart when Campbell netted at the second attempt after his lob had crashed against the crossbar.

Unselfish play from striker Jonny Nelson allowed Campbell to complete his quickfire treble moments later and the hero of the day added a fourth near the end after latching on to a long ball over the top.

Charlton now know a win against Crown in their final group game will book them a final place.

Charlton: Eadsworth, Gill (Drew 75), Kennard, McGee, Draper (Platt 85), Clark, Coombes, Omar, M Nelson (Klein 80), J Nelson, Campbell.

Brockley & District League - Derek Mead Memorial Cup

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2 Prince Albert A 1

Charlton came from behind to take the spoils against higher-ranked opposition in this round-robin competition.

The hosts were on top from the start but initially failed to cash in on their dominance and an own goal from Stephen Draper past stand-in keeper Jonny Neal gave Prince Albert the lead.

A formation change on the hour saw the Addicks, for whom Hux Omar impressed, switch to 3-5-2 with Jermaine Kinsman entering the fray - and the move paid immediate dividends.

Simeon Campbell waltzed through to net the leveller and then notched the winner from the penalty spot shortly after he was fouled in the box.

Charlton: Neal, Draper, McGee, Gill, Halil (Kinsman 60), Klein, Coombes, Omar, Ani, J Nelson, Campbell.

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2 Blackhorse 4

Charlton suffered another defeat on a day to forget for player-boss Dave Nelson.

He conceded two penalties and although one was superbly saved by keeper Oliver Eadsworth, Blackhorse were not to be denied on the day.

Simeon Campbell and Duncan Rowley hit the Charlton consolations.

Charlton: Eadsworth, Gill (Rowley 46), D Nelson, Kennard, Draper, Clarke, Omar, Klien, M Nelson, J Nelson, Campbell.

Docklands 3 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0

Dominant Charlton hogged the possession in their second fixture of the new year - but paid the price for their profligacy in front of goal.

Paul Clarke was in good form for a strong Addicks line-up, but it was the hosts who walked away with the points.

Charlton: Eadsworth, Neal, Kennard, McGee, Draper, Lloyd, Omar, Ani, M Nelson, J Nelson, Clarke. Subs: D Nelson, Rowley, Klien.

Brockley and District League, Division Two

Sunday, January 8th, 2006

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0 Charlton St Germain 2

The last time these two sides met Charlton lost 6-4 but this game was a lot tighter after the hosts adopted a 4-1-4-1 formation.

CSG were largely stifled in the opening period, but a defensive slip allowed them to edge in front before the break.

Debutant Eze Ani replaced Simeon Campbell in midfield at the start of the second half and Simeon Campbell joined Jonny Nelson up front shortly afterwards in a bid to pull the hosts back into the game.

But more poor defending allowed CSG to double their lead and although the hosts, for whom Jason Coombes impressed throughout, dominated the closing stages they couldn't find a way through.

Charlton: Eadsforth, Draper (Campbell 50), Kennard, Neal, Omar, Coombes, Clarke, Klein (Ani 46), Gill (Rowley 65), M Nelson, J Nelson. Subs (not used): D Nelson, Taylor.

English Deaf Football Challenge Cup second round

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

St John's Arsenal 5 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0

Injuries and work commitments meant Charlton were far from full strength as they took on their strong hosts in this cup clash.

The visitors handed a debut to keeper Oliver Eadsworth, formerly of Fulham Deaf FC, but although they defended strongly, St John's opened the scoring before the break.

The hosts were well on top after the interval as Charlton tired and despite Matt Durant replacing Ali Halil, they struck four more times to complete the nap hand.

Charlton: Eadsforth, Draper, Kennard, Gill, Halil (Durrant), Neal, Lloyd, Omar, Drew, Rowley, Kinsman. Sub (not used): Giddens.

Crown 1 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 4

A double from Simeon Campbell helped Charlton return to winning ways on a chilly Sunday morning.

The Addicks started well and Paul Clarke had already fired wide before the winger followed up to nab a fifth-minute opener after Campbell's shot was parried.

Then the two Simeons, Klien and Campbell, combined for Dave Nelson to tap home a second and put the visitors in firm control.

Stand-in keeper Duncan Rowley pulled off a couple of smart stops at the end of the half to preserve the advantage but there was little between the teams after the restart.

Crown, who triumphed 3-0 when the sides met three weeks earlier, halved the deficit in the 70th minute with a scrappy strike - but Charlton would not be denied.

Campbell sidestepped a home defender to restore the two-goal cushion after good work from Klien and then doubled his tally from the penalty spot as the visitors, for whom Gavin Lloyd shone after driving up from Portsmouth, recorded their first victory since September.

Charlton: Rowley, Draper, Kennard, McGee, Omar, Clarke (Taylor 85), Coombes, Lloyd, Klien, Nelson (Drew 75), Campbell.

Brockley & District League Fox Cup

Sunday, November 20th, 2005

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 4 Charlton Saint Germain 6

A rousing second-half performance couldn't stop Charlton Deaf FC crashing out of the Fox Cup in a 10-goal thriller at the qualifying stage on Sunday.

The hosts were dealt a massive blow before kick-off with no goalkeepers available, and stand-in stopper Duncan Rowley was beaten four times in the opening half an hour.

Rowley showed fine reactions to save a penalty from the rampant visitors and Matthew Nelson pulled a goal back before CSG made it 5-1 at the break.

Player-boss Dave Nelson came on at the break and Stephen Draper was introduced to the backline.

And although the visitors notched a sixth shortly after the restart, the hosts began to bite back.

Dave Nelson struck after a free-kick from Simeon Campbell had hit the post, and the manager added a second before teeing up Richard Kennard to make it 6-4.

Jonny Nelson also had a penalty saved during a barnstorming finale but Charlton had left themselves too much to do.

Charlton: Rowley, J Neal (Durant 75), Kennard, Omar, Halil (Draper 46), Clarke, Coombes, M Nelson, Klien (D Nelson 46), J Nelson, Campbell. Sub (not used): Jason Taylor.

Brockley & District League Beatty Cup - first round

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Coldharbour 4 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 3

Underdogs Charlton, of the Second Division, came close to a big upset against First Division championship chasing Coldharbour on Sunday.

The Addicks took a shock lead against their illustrious counterparts, currently second in the top division, and also led 3-2 in the second half.

But despite some desperate defending Coldharbour's pressure finally told inside the last 10 minutes and the home side managed to progress into the second round.

It was a moral victory of sorts for Charlton, currently second from bottom in the Second Division, and the Addicks took the lead after just 15 minutes through striker Jonny Nelson.

Charlton also saw other chances come and go through Paul Clarke and Simeon Campbell, but Coldharbour remained calm and were 2-1 ahead by half-time.

That prompted a change of goalkeeper at the interval, with Tom Platt replacing Thomas Giddens, and a plan to employ greater width paid dividends when the Addicks grabbed two goals in five minutes past shell-shocked Coldharbour.

Clarke ran on to a clever throughball from Campbell down the right flank for the equaliser and then Campbell himself netted from close range.

The hosts immediately stepped up a gear and constantly threatened the Charlton goal, hitting the crossbar on two occasions.

And the pressure was ultimately too much for the tiring visitors as Coldharbour scored twice inside the last 10 minutes to clinch a thrilling victory. Charlton: Giddens (Platt 46), Neal, Kennard, Gill, Draper, Clarke, Coombes, Klien, M Nelson, J Nelson, Campbell.

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0 Crown 2

Although one of their best performances of the season, it just wasn't enough for the Addicks in their latest Brockley & District League match.

Charlton restricted the highly rated Crown to only a few goalscoring opportunities, but the visitors found the net on two occasions, once in each half.

For the home side Jonny Nelson and Simeon Campbell both went close but Charlton couldn't find the finishing touch and Crown eased to a fairly comfortable win.

Charlton: Platt, Neal, Omar, Kennard, Drew, Clarke, Coombes, Gill (Klein 46), M Nelson (Draper 55), Campbell, J Nelson. Sub (not used): Rowley.

English Deaf Football Challenge Cup - first round

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 6 Chelsea Deaf FC 3

Six Charlton players got on the scoresheet as the Addicks progressed into the second round of the English Deaf Football Challenge Cup.

The two sides had met just the previous week in a league match and the away side started the stronger as they took a 1-0 lead.

The advantage didn't last long and winger Jonny Neal equalised from a 25-yard free-kick, but the Addicks again fell behind two minutes later.

Charlton bounced back once more, however, scoring three goals in the next 15 minutes through a 30-yard strike from forward Dave Nelson, a mazy dribble from winger Jermaine Kinsman and a volley from a corner by central midfielder Mark Gill.

It was still nip and tuck at half-time, though, as the Blues again found the net to reduce the deficit to 4-3.

The second half was a more evenly contested affair as Chelsea made a couple of substitutions and changed their formation from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2.

In the 70th minute Charlton were awarded a penalty when a player was fouled in Chelsea penalty area and striker Jonny Nelson had no trouble from the spot.

With 15 minutes to go, Tom Platt, who had been playing in defence, was moved into midfield and he completed the scoring in the 85th minute. Charlton: Giddens, Draper, McGee, Halil (Drew 75), Platt, Neal, Coombes, Gill, Kinsman, Rowley, D Nelson (J Nelson 60).

Chelsea Deaf FC 1 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 3

A late goal blitz continued Charlton's winning league run on Sunday.

Trailing to the Blues with 10 minutes remaining at Putney, three late goals completed a dramatic turnaround.

Both sides cancelled each other out in the opening period, although Charlton were forced to reshuffle when defender Matt Durant pulled his hamstring and was replaced by Stephen Draper.

The visitors, for whom Hux Omar impressed, made a further alteration for the second half, switching to an attacking 4-4-3 on the narrow pitch, but it was Chelsea who notched first, 10 minutes in.

Jonny Nelson capped a slick passing move with an 80th-minute leveller and Jermaine Kinsman, moved up front after the break, saw his deflected shot go in-off the post to give the Addicks the lead.

Nelson then grabbed a second in the closing stages to complete the comeback victory.

Charlton: Giddens, Drew, Omar, Durant (Draper 15), Halil, Miller, Coombes, Gill, Kinsman, J Nelson, D Nelson.

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 2 Prince Albert Regulars 5

Charlton attempted to do things the hard way by coming from behind against Prince Albert Regulars, but found their five-goal lead just too much to overturn. The first half saw the away side score two goals, one coming from a penalty harshly awarded against the Addicks when referee believed goalkeeper Tom Platt had pulled down a striker despite clutching the ball in his hands.

And matters didn't improve in first 20 minutes of the second period, as Charlton conceded three more goals.

That led to a double substitution by manager Dave Nelson, which saw Paul Clarke replaced by Jermaine Kinsman and Chris Drew replaced by debutant Ben Miller, and the switch immediately paid dividends.

Charlton soon started to control the game and scored a couple of goals through Simeon Campbell and Matthew Nelson.

But time wasn't on their side after their slow start, and the Addicks went down 5-2. Charlton: Platt, Draper (M Nelson 46), Kennard, Omar, Drew (Miller 75), Klien, Coombes, Neal, Lloyd, Clarke (Kinsman 75), Campbell.

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 10 Walthamstow Deaf FC 0

The Addicks grabbed five goals in each half to reach double figures in the second match of the Southern League season.

Charlton passed the ball around with ease under the floodlights at the Ladywell Arena in the opening 45 minutes.

A number of crosses into the penalty area caused the visiting defence all kinds of problems, and Jason Taylor, Duncan Rowley, Jonny Nelson, Chris Drew and Jonny Neal all found the net in the first half.

The home side's progress was interrupted after the break, however, when Walthamstowe were reduced to 10 players following a red card for dissent.

And a crazy 10-minute spell also saw two more players, including Charlton's Taylor, sent off, following a brawl.

Despite only having nine players, Walthamstow did hit the post in their search for a consolation goal, but after 70 minutes Charlton rediscovered their fluency and scored another five goals past their now disheartened rivals.

Rowley, Nelson and Neal all grabbed their second of the game, while Jermaine Kinsman and Dave Nelson also put their names on the scoresheet.

Charlton: Giddens, Drew, D Nelson, Halil, Platt, Taylor, Neal, Jason Coombes, Kinsman, J Nelson, Rowley.

Trinity 5 Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 0

Charlton failed to halt their losing streak as Trinity went nap.

The hosts raced into a three-goal lead in a hot-tempered first half with Charlton player-boss Dave Nelson acting as stand-in referee.

The allotted official took charge after the restart and although the on-pitch action ran smoother and Charlton improved, with Paul Clarke impressive, it was Trinity that wrapped up the points with two further goals.

Charlton: Giddens, Draper, Gill, Neal, Drew, J Nelson, Coombes, Klien (Nelson 75), Clarke, Campbell (Rowley 65), Kennard (Matt Durant 50). Sub (not used): D Nelson, Halil.

Understrength Charlton showed plenty of spirit but were always up against it after starting with just nine men in their latest league fixture.

Dulwich struck twice in the opening 25 minutes but the visitors rallied after the arrival of Chris Drew, and Simeon Campbell was let down by some poor finishing after some dazzling bursts.

The home side completed the scoring after the restart as Charlton, for whom Simeon Klien was man of the match, failed to make much of an impact.

Charlton Athletic Deaf 1 Docklands 3

Charlton slipped to league defeat, their first of the season, in a game of two penalties.

Simeon Campbell saw his spot-kick saved by the Docklands keeper while the visitors notched from 12 yards after a disputed decision from the referee.

Sluggish defending let in Docklands to claim a 15th-minute lead but Charlton were soon level when Campbell twisted to shoot home.

Docklands quickly restored their advantage and Campbell then missed a chance to put his side level when Paul Clark was hacked down.

Then, after the action quickly switched to the other end, Charlton were left baffled and bemused when the referee awarded Docklands a penalty.

Although keeper Tom Platt guessed the right way he couldn't keep out the spot-kick and despite an improved second-half effort, Charlton ended up empty handed.

Wonder winger William Stone struck twice as Charlton won their first away match of the season.

Stone opened the scoring in the 10th minute, beating the Blackhorse keeper with a blistering drive, but confusion at the back allowed the home side to draw level.

The calamities continued at the other end, however, with the Addicks restoring their lead through Jonny Nelson shortly before the break after a misplaced clearance from the home keeper.

The impressive Jason Coombes centred for Stone to smash home his second soon after the restart and Simeon Campbell raced clear to add a fourth before Blackhorse notched a late consolation.

Charlton Athletic Deaf FC 3 The Talma 2

Despite playing the first half hour with just 10 men, Charlton kicked off their B&D campaign with a win as strike ace Simeon Campbell hit a hat-trick.

The hosts, inspired by Jonny Neal, returning after a two-year absence, had defended well to keep the scoreline blank until player-boss Dave Nelson entered the fold.

Jason Coombes and Nelson combined to set up Simeon Campbell to give Charlton an interval lead but Talma hit back within seconds of the restart.

Campbell then completed his treble latching on to two fine balls over the top from Jonny Nelson and although Talma struck again, the hosts held firm for the win.

It was the first time in the team's history they had won both games over the weekend.

Charlton: Platt, Draper, Neal, Durant, Omar, Stone, Coombes, Campbell, Clark, J Nelson, D Nelson.

Charlton Athletic Deaf 5 Wilts/Dorset Deaf FC 4

There was plenty of entertainment in Charlton's opening match of the season at Sparrows Lane and a late goal from Jonny Nelson settled this nine-goal thriller.

Poor defending had let in the visitors to grab an early lead and although Nelson replied after good work from Jason Coombes, more slack play at the back let in Wilts to restore their lead.

Jermaine Kinsman drew Charlton level with a superb solo effort shortly before the interval and a formation change led to an upturn in fortunes for the home side as Duncan Rowley fired them 3-2 up at a corner.

More defensive lethargy allowed the visitors to haul themselves level but Dave Nelson's header at another flag-kick put Charlton back ahead.

Wilts hit back to make it 4-4 but Jonny Nelson sealed the win 10 minutes from time.

Charlton: Giddens, Draper, Durant, Kennard, Platt, Kinsman, Coombes, Omar, Taylor (D Nelson 65), J Nelson, Rowley.
