Thomas Myhre's Picture

Thomas Myhre

When Addicks number one Dean Kiely fractured his finger in training, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley swooped to prevent a potential goalkeeping crisis by signing Norwegian international stopper Thomas Myhre on a one-year deal on August 7th.

And although he had an initial wait to prove his worth, with both Stephan Andersen and then the fit-again Kiely preferred at the start of the Premiership campaign, Myhre was one of the success stories of 2005/06.

The previous season Myhre had helped Sunderland reach the Premiership, and - following a brief stint with Fredrikstad in his homeland as he kept fit on a match-by-match deal - Myhre found himself back at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the season against his former club.

He was an unused substitute that day, and had to wait until the Carling Cup opener against Hartlepool United on September 20th to make his debut, and he would not feature again until Boxing Day.

The inclusion of Myhre was one of four changes made by former manager Alan Curbishley for the visit of Arsenal, and the big Norwegian impressed, saving brilliantly from Freddie Ljungberg and being unfortunate to concede what proved the decisive goal from Jose Antonio Reyes.

A clean sheet followed in a welcome New Year's Eve home win over West Ham United and Myhre was up and running.

He would produce nine more clean sheets and was a prominent part of Charlton's new-found sturdiness at the back in the second half of the season.

Indeed, he went more than nine hours without conceding a Premiership goal on home territory before being beaten by Mark Viduka's stunning drive on March 12th.

Myhre was also a regular internationally and is edging ever closer to 50 caps for his country.

He would surely have passed that landmark if Norway had qualified for the World Cup but it was the Czech Republic who prevailed over two legs in a qualification play-off, despite more Myhre heroics.

Back in England, Myhre missed the final two Premiership games through illness but few would forget his sterling efforts for his 11th club in the last 10 years.

Curbishley swooped to clinch his man the day before Myhre was due to play a fourth league game for Fredrikstad, and Myhre travelled back to Norway prior to the match to tell the club in person about the proposed deal with the Addicks.

He first came to prominence in England when he joined Everton from Norwegian side Viking Stavanger for £800,000 in November 1997, making 82 appearances for the Toffees over four years and playing a key role in keeping the Merseysiders in the top flight that first season.

But he broke his ankle early in the following campaign and found himself frozen out at Goodison Park when he returned to fitness, Paul Gerrard having claimed the number-one jersey.

He later opted to go out on loan, playing for Glasgow Rangers and spending two months with Birmingham City in 1999/2000, and featured for Tranmere Rovers and FC Copenhagen the following season, before a £375,000 move to Turkish side Besiktas.

However, he returned to the Premiership in July 2002 when Sunderland needed back-up for Thomas Sorensen.

Sorensen later departed to Aston Villa while Mart Poom struggled with injuries, allowing Myhre to be number one at the Stadium of Light in 2004/05, making 31 league appearances as the Black Cats claimed the Championship and promotion to the Premiership.

On the international front he was part of the Norwegian squad that went to France for the 1998 World Cup, memorably beating Brazil 2-1 in Marseille.
